MediaJustice (“MJ”) is seeking its first Director of Development to lead MJ’s development strategy and implementation during a period of growth for the team and organization. The Director of Development role is ideal for someone versatile, proactive and strategically-minded, with fundraising and leadership experience. They have a passion for movement work, relationship building, and an interest in fundraising principles grounded in equity and social justice.  

The Director of Development will define the organization’s first Development department, selecting a team of 1-3 additional hires. In partnership with MJ’s Executive Director, they will co-create and implement a development strategy that, over the next several years, will double the organization’s nearly $4M budget through institutional and individual giving channels. These ambitious growth goals will fuel the largest grassroots network of media justice organizations in the country, and will position MediaJustice to deepen their impact in local and national campaigns. 

The Director of Development position is a 40 hour/week, full-time, exempt position that is currently fully remote. The role will include travel when it is deemed safe.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Key responsibilities:

  • Overall Development Management and Leadership: Establish and supervise a team of 1-3 development staff and guide the organization’s funding portfolio to double from $3M annually within the next several years.  Engage with the organization’s strategic direction and decision-making as a member of the Leadership Team, encouraging cross-collaboration and breaking down operational/programmatic siloes.

  • Strategic Decision Making: Assess progress to institutional and individual funding goals in the immediate term as well as against the organization’s stated strategic goals. Guide the strategy of key campaigns, relationships, and how we use systems accordingly. Advise the organization on strategic investments to support the growth of MJ’s development portfolio. 

  • Development Administration & Compliance: In coordination with the Finance team and Executive Leadership, ensure the timely completion, review and approval of reports and financial statements. 

  • Institutional Giving: In partnership with the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership, formalize and expand a sustainable, proactive pipeline of foundation and institutional funders. 

  • Individual Giving: Formalize a major and recurring donor cultivation and stewardship strategy, and oversee the development of a grassroots fundraising program to engage MediaJustice subscribers and donors in our work.

Skills and competencies:

  • Leading and managing: leading up, down and across with empathy, vision, and confidence. The DoD isn’t afraid to choose a course of action, and is adept at delegating, motivating, and inspiring others. 

  • Anticipatory thinking: the DoD will make decisions informed by relationships with staff and partners, a strong strategic intuition, professional experience, and data. With an eye toward long term growth, the DoD will guide the team to take  advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks or challenges. 

  • Relationship building: demonstrated experience building meaningful, values-based long-term relationships with movement allies, donors and funders through intentional processes and systems.

  • Planning and organizing: manage the Development team and budget and plan projects and tasks to meet internal and external deadlines. Prioritize what is most important while supporting staff wellbeing and capacity. 

  • Collaborating: ability to establish and nurture relationships and partner effectively with stakeholders across the organization, especially colleagues in communications and programmatic functions. The DoD will bring a spirit of collaboration to all their efforts, as it lies at the heart of MJ’s mission and work, and is a crucial part of building a development culture.

  • Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: deeply committed to an anti-oppressive framework as a lifelong practice, passionate about learning about racial justice, disability justice, and White supremacy and how it shows up within the workplace and Development landscape. Willing to learn from and repair mistakes.

Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing and growing a portfolio of at least $2 million, whether an entire portfolio or subset of revenue channels

  • Experience leading a functional area within a larger Development department, or managing small Development team

  • Comfortable supporting Development needs at an organization with ambitious 5 year revenue growth goals 

Compensation/Benefits: 

We are currently revamping our entire compensation policy to one that is value-aligned, transparent and clear - and anticipate being complete in April. As part of this new policy we will have set salaries based on level in the organization and years of experience, with salaries benchmarked to be in the top 25% for the three most expensive U.S. cities. We anticipate the salary for this role being on par with all our Directors - between $107K - $121K, based on the experience-tier you fall in.  

In addition to the salary, this role will include a full benefits package which is also being revamped, but includes:

  • A fully remote organization, with work flexibility to meet your schedule

  • 3 weeks of vacation, 3.5 weeks of office closures, and 13 paid holidays

  • Monthly $150 wellness and $200 home office reimbursements

  • Medical, Vision and Dental for $30/month, plus 50% coverage for family premiums.

  • Non-elective 401K contributions - regardless of employee contribution

  • Paid sabbatical after 5 years
