The Life Skills Instructor/Coordinator is responsible for day-to-day oversight of Homeboy’s life skills classes, including teaching Parenting classes and co-facilitating Project Fatherhood groups as part of our family reunification services. This position will also collaborate with staff to develop and implement psychosocial educational core curriculum for Homeboy trainees as they move through our 18-month training program.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Oversee variety of weekly life skills classes: Parenting, Project Fatherhood, Anger Management, Alternatives to Violence Project, Financial Literacy, Driver Training Preparation, etc. This includes instruction of some classes, and supervision of volunteer class facilitators.
- In collaboration with grantor Children’s Institute, Inc. (CII), coordinate Project Fatherhood program at Homeboy: co-facilitate weekly groups with CII clinical staff; conduct intakes with men entering Project Fatherhood group; provide ongoing mentorship and guidance to fathers in program; provide monthly narrative report to CII; increase collaborative efforts with CII to strengthen partnership and grow program and services for fathers; comply with all federal grant requirements.
- Facilitate weekly Parenting classes for Homeboy trainees and court-ordered community clients; conduct client intakes and enrollment; follow up with clients on progress; correspond with social workers, courts, DCFS, and PO’s regarding client progress in classes.
- Collaborate with Director and staff to further develop psychosocial educational core curriculum for trainees.
- Maintain accurate files and complete data for client attendance and progress; coordinate with department staff to ensure timely distribution of progress letters and certificates of completion.
- Train and supervise Homeboy trainees assigned to Educational Services department.
- Provide mentorship to all trainees that directly supports the reentry process by serving as positive and responsive role model.
- Provide strong day-to-day leadership and presence, while supporting an open-door policy.
- Attend regular department staff meetings and quarterly Senior Staff meetings.
- Meet with and provide weekly reports to Director.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience:
- M.A., preferably in Social Work or Adult Education.
- Trained as Parent educator.
- Prior experience working with gang population.
- Prior experience teaching/facilitating adult groups.
- 1 year supervisory and administrative experience.
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary to be negotiated depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time exempt position with a benefits package including health, dental, vision, life and retirement account.
