About Physicians for Responsibility

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is an independent501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been working for more than 50 years to create a healthy, just, and peaceful world for both the present and future generations. Throughout its history, PSR has provided a strong medical voice against the development and use of nuclear weapons. Our other major programmatic focus is climate change — another catastrophic disaster that threatens the plant. This year, as the health and safety risks associated with climate change become more apparent, and the dangers posed by nuclear weapons are making headlines once again, we are moving aggressively to revamp our programs and materials (including a new web site, next year) to respond to the growing needs of our revitalized membership.

Senior Manager of Philanthropy

PSR is currently searching for a Senior Manager of Philanthropy, who is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the PSR development team, including delegation of responsibilities among the team, promotion of efficient communication within the team, and recruitment, training, mentoring, and retention of staff. Together with PSR’s Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Senior Manager of Philanthropy develops our short- and long-range fundraising objectives, and works with the Executive Director to produce and implement an annual development plan. He/she currently supervises a staff of 1-2 individuals, including the Membership Manager.

Areas of Responsibility:

Major Responsibilities

  • Identifies and builds relationships with funding prospects, and maintains relationships with current donors, including frequent communication and outreach on PSR activities, priorities, and developments.
  • Oversees the writing and editing of all solicitation communications.
  • Together with the Director of Operations, manages our direct mail budget.
  • Manages our planned giving program.
  • Manages preparation for and follow-up from donor meetings with PSR’s Executive Director.
  • In collaboration with program communications staff, devise and implements outreach strategies for current and prospective donors regarding PSR events and publications to ensure maximum fundraising impact.
  • Oversees maintenance of complete files on donors, including all correspondence proposals and reports.
  • Develops fundraising reports for PSR staff and board as needed.

In a nutshell, as the leader of our development team, you’ll need to be able to conceptualize, plan, and implement a programmatic approach to building relationships and securing philanthropic support — including setting ambitious goals, developing strategies for prospects, prioritizing activities, asking for gifts, and coordinating the involvement, as needed, of staff, board members and other volunteers.

This is a wonderful opportunity for an emerging philanthropy leader with an innovative spirit to bring fresh ideas to all aspects of our development operation. The ideal candidate is a creative, outside-the-box strategic thinker who is equally adept at managing all of the basic nuts-and-bolts operational aspects of a small but busy development office.
