The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Impact Malaria project is PMI’s flagship global service delivery project, supporting countries in their efforts to fight malaria and save lives by strengthening diagnosis, treatment, and drug-based prevention for those most at risk—particularly young children and pregnant women. PMI Impact Malaria is a USAID contract hosted and led by PSI as the prime contractor.
PMI Impact Malaria is helping national malaria control programs tackle malaria service delivery challenges by working to:
- Close the gaps in malaria diagnosis and treatment to get the right medicine, with the correct diagnosis, to patients in need, in the timeliest manner.
- Unlock the potential of key drug-based prevention approaches by helping countries introduce, implement, and scale-up proven interventions.
- Strengthen malaria health systems and data for decision-making to accelerate service delivery improvements and advance key learnings.
The PMI Impact Malaria (IM) team provides global technical leadership along with implementation support and technical assistance in health facility and community settings in up to 27 countries around the world. We are a focused, multi-disciplined, and multi-cultured team, based out of Washington DC, working through PSI country offices as well as through our partners Jhpiego, MCDI, and UCSF.
IM is seeking a highly organized, creative, and self-motivated Associate Communications Manager to provide key support across the spectrum of IM’s communications activities. The position will consist of digital and traditional communications spanning brand management, malaria technical communications, storytelling, thought leadership, and advocacy.
The full-time position is based in Washington DC with up to 10% travel and reports to the Communications Manager.
The Associate Communications Manager will provide a wide range of communications contributions, including:
- Support the development and achievement of communications calendars and targets, in line with IM’s objectives of demonstrating impact, leadership, and expertise.
- Create, plan, schedule, and manage a wide range of compelling written and multimedia content. Examples include success stories, social media interactions, web pages, country briefs, press releases, infographics, presentations, news posts, a fully captioned photo library, video scripts, etc.
- Develop, write, ghost write, and edit materials for the web and social media, and oversee strategic deployment of social and digital communications campaigns.
- Maintain and expand IM’s website by regularly posting content to the back end, troubleshooting bugs, and working with IM’s web developer to plan and test updates.
- Copy and content edit reports, briefs, and other products, aligning with IM’s editorial and visual style guide, paying close attention to grammar, mechanics, and consistency.
- Working with team members, ensure that internal audiences are kept apprised of project updates through email messages, brown bags, webinars, and other vehicles for direct communications.
- Produce and update guidance materials and templates that enhance the communications knowledge and capacity of team members at headquarters and in country offices.
- Assist with procuring vendors and consultants and managing these relationships to secure and oversee direction of asset collection and creation, including graphic design, photography, and videography.
- Coordinate translations to produce English and French versions of communications content.

The basics:
- About three to five years of experience working in a fast-paced office environment, particularly in an editorial or communications role; internships will be considered as experience.
- Excellent English writing, editing, and storytelling skills that demonstrate an ability to write for a variety of audiences, simplify complex information, and bring characters and data to life.
- Experience producing a wide variety of high quality multimedia communications products that are both stylish and substantive.
- Strong exposure to digital communications and social media planning and strategy.
- Familiarity with content management systems and/or a willingness to expend the effort and practice needed to become IM’s primary webmaster.
- Fluency with PowerPoint and the ability and maturity to create presentations for senior staff members both within and outside the communications portfolio.

- Experience with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, etc.).
- Fluency in written and spoken English; French proficiency is desirable.
