The Director of Individual Giving (US-UN) focuses on organizational strategic priorities, with a special emphasis on fundraising in support of the UN Foundation’s (UNF) portfolio of work to support a strong US-UN relationship. S/he creates and implements strategies for the ongoing cultivation of donors capable of making major gifts focusing on markets of highest return to UNF.  The Director will conduct initial exploratory meetings with donors and prospects to determine capacity and inclination to give and conduct donor calls to cultivate relationships with donors and prospects.

The Director of Individual Giving (US-UN) is accountable for UNF’s fundraising performance of middle ($1,000- $9,999) and major donors ($10,000-$100,000), including identification of prospects, development of donor strategies, cultivation and coordination alongside Senior Leaders, and direct solicitation and stewardship. S/he is responsible for enhancing, establishing and administering initiatives designed to achieve both short and long-range advancements in middle and major donor fundraising. S/he will develop comprehensive strategies that will produce sustainable, long-term revenue for UNF including for its advocacy work; craft proposals for high-net-worth philanthropists; and plan and execute fundraising plans/mini-campaigns. S/he will directly manage a growing portfolio of donors ($1,000-$25,000), including UNF’s Global Leadership Council. 

S/he will maintain ongoing contact with lapsed and current donors and work on a variety of activities which may include providing program information to prospects and drafting routine correspondence and acknowledgments. Using Salesforce, this person will update donor information, produce reports, perform analysis, and track and cultivate donors.  This position has the potential to supervise associate-level staff.

The Director of Individual Giving (US-UN) reports directly to the UN Foundation’s Vice President, Development as part of the Integrated Development team and will work closely under the Foundation’s Senior Vice President responsible for its U.S.-UN advocacy and grassroots efforts.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Experience in soliciting and closing gifts $10,000+.
  • Experience building sustainable revenue programs for middle and major donors.
  • Helps set the portfolio’s goals for unrestricted, programmatic, and restricted project funding from individual UNF and UNA (United Nations Association) donors.
  • Develops and manages a pool of individual prospects in close collaboration with other UNF programs and UNF’s Integrated Development team.
  • Manages strategy for all solicitations and actively solicits and negotiates gifts. 
  • Devises successful cultivation and stewardship strategies for program donors and prospects from all constituency groups.
  • Initiates contact with prospects and donors on behalf of Foundation leadership and schedules appointments with interested parties.
    • Attends meetings when appropriate.
    • Develops presentation materials and briefing strategies to support meetings.
  • Manages prospect research.
  • Manages all development-related correspondence including grant proposals, acknowledgement letters, and reports.
  • Develops and maintains prospect tracking systems and implements other reporting and structural systems that will indicate program progress.
  • Assists in the preparation of public/press announcements associated with significant grants. 
  • Oversees development-related contracts and serves as the point of contact for any U.S.-UN fundraising contractors.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as necessitated by the position or as assigned. 
  • Some domestic travel required. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field and at least ten years’ fundraising experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10 years of experience in fundraising preferred, including demonstrated success stewarding major gifts and foundation relations. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong background in program planning and strategic initiative development. 
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading, and speaking skills.
  • Strong leadership, administrative, and budgetary skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, adapt to changing priorities and multi-task to meet deadlines.
  • Proven experience and success in developing and implementing major gift fundraising programs and track record of personally soliciting major (6-figure and greater) gifts.
  • Experience building planned giving programs with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequests.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
