The Global Development Policy Specialist will provide support in advancing Save the Children’s global policy and advocacy objectives. This position reports to the Senior Director, Global Health and Development Policy. In this capacity, the specialist will work closely with the Senior Director and the Associate Director, Global Development Policy on advocacy efforts targeting Congress and the U.S. Administration on global health and development issues, including advocacy on the federal budget and appropriations. This position will also contribute to other Public Policy and Advocacy areas as needed.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Advocate to the U.S. government to advance Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) 40%

  • Carry out legislative strategies to increase support in Congress for maintaining MNCH a key USG global health and international development priority and support outreach to USAID on global MNCH issues.
  • Support Save the Children’s engagement with relevant coalitions
  • Plan events to advance global MNCH issues such as Capitol Hill briefings, high level policy dinners or NGO roundtable discussions.

Support Budget and Appropriations Policy and Advocacy 25%

  • Provide support for analyzing annual President’s Budget request for the International Affairs budget and annual State and Foreign Operations appropriations bills
  • Gather intel on developments related to budget and appropriations
  • Provide Congressional outreach as needed to advance budget and appropriations advocacy

Support Policy and Legislative activities for Save the Children’s Priority International Development and Global Health issues 20%.

  • Provide support as needed to Congressional advocacy on other issues across the department.
  • Monitor and track legislative developments and other Congressional activities such as hearings and briefings on international development issues.
  • Represent Save the Children in coalitions as needed.
  • Assist with talking points and preparing materials

General Program Support 15%

  • Maintain and update databases to track Congressional and administration relationships.
  • Provide administrative and operational support for meetings and events
Educational Background: 
High School Diploma or equivalent
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years of professional work experience in public policy & advocacy;
  • Strong project management skills and ability to juggle multiple work streams with competing deadlines;
  • Strong skills in writing and internal and external communication;
  • Social media and communications savvy;
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment with a learning mindset;
  • Excellent team player with strong collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, international relations, international development or related field;
