Special Assistant to the President, Executive Communications

Provide expert executive communications support for the ACS CAN President, Senior Leadership Group, and, when necessary, board officers and the chief executive officer of ACS CAN. Maximize the effectiveness of internal and external communications including speeches, presentations, talking points, and electronic updates in support of ACS CAN’s advocacy priorities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides in-depth communications support for the ACS CAN President, including researching and drafting talking points, speeches, remarks and presentations.
  • Working with the Senior Executive Assistant to the President, drafts correspondence on the ACS CAN President’s behalf (proactive and reactive)
  • Prepares pre-read and meeting materials as well as PowerPoint presentations for ACS and ACS CAN board meetings
  • Drafts a monthly advocacy update to inform key internal stakeholders and board members about local, state and federal public policy advocacy accomplishments
  • Working with the Associate Director, Social Media and Digital Content and Manager, Media Advocacy, supports strategy, creation and execution of content for president’s Cancer CANdor blog, Twitter handle and LinkedIn profile
  • Researches and supports opportunities to elevate the ACS CAN President as a thought leader among Washington, D.C. health policy elite
  • Provides staff support to key standing meetings and strategic projects
  • Works with the Senior Executive Assistant to the President, Vice President of Media Advocacy and Communications and Vice President, Advocacy Administration, Training and Operations, to ensure the strategic and coordinated involvement of the president in ACS CAN’s legislative, grassroots, policy development, media advocacy, and fundraising efforts.
  • Oversees special projects as assigned and participates on project teams as needed.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and work experience.
Skills/Experience: 

Formal Knowledge:

  • 5+ years progressive experience or equivalent in communications, media/public relations, journalism, or related field; supporting an executive, non-profit experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of politics and Congress essential; knowledge of cancer and/or health care issues preferred.
  • Strong verbal skills and the ability to communicate authoritatively with colleagues at various levels of seniority essential.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects at once, exercise reasoned and experienced judgment, handle sensitive and sometimes confidential information and exhibit a high level of attention to detail.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently and think creatively, and able to quickly grasp complicated policy matters.
  • Must be skilled at research, analysis, and the evaluation of information from multiple sources.
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint and other commonly used office applications essential

Special Mental or Physical Demands:

  • Limited travel, including evening and weekend work required.
  • Ability to lift 30lbs.
