Alliance for a Healthier Generation - Chief Development Officer

Healthier Generation is seeking a dynamic and passionate leader to serve as its Chief Development Officer (CDO). Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Development Officer has a staff of five (5) professional fundraising staff and will lead the strategic direction and overall management of the organization's revenue/fundraising operations across institutional (corporate, foundation) and public funding sources, as well as among individual donors. The CDO will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team utilizing a shared, collegial approach to revenue generation and manage a team in support of a culture of philanthropy.

This is an ideal opportunity for a seasoned professional with a demonstrated track record in institutional and individual giving to drive significant impact in support of Healthier Generation’s mission.

Location for the selected candidate is flexible, provided there is easy access to a major airport to facilitate cost effective and time efficient travel.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Fundraising

  • Develop and refine a comprehensive annual fundraising strategy in alignment with Healthier Generation's organizational vision and goals.
  • With CEO, act as lead fundraiser for Healthier Generation, securing gifts and grants from corporations, foundations, and government programs with to meet/exceed annual revenue targets.
  • Expand Healthier Generation’s base of philanthropic partners, cultivating and soliciting gifts from new and existing high net worth donors and influencers.
  • Identify and pursue new sources of corporate and foundation funding – working with Chief Program Officer and colleagues to develop a national and community-based value proposition of programmatic impact that will attract and sustain new philanthropic partners.
  • Work with CFO and program leads to conceptualize and oversee the development and submission of competitive grant proposals for governmental funders.
  • Collaborate with Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) to establish and strengthen Healthier Generation as a philanthropic brand, as well as lead revenue-generating marketing strategies.
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders to create innovative marketplace revenue models and partnership strategies.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of ambitious new strategies and sources for revenue generation – including fee for service, collective impact and non-conventional strategies that align with Healthier Generation’s programmatic model and maximize its network of partners.
  • Ensure the efficient use of fundraising systems and processes, as well as accurate and timely grant reporting.
  • With CEO, cultivate and engage the Board of Directors on an ongoing basis, with a strategic approach toward establishing a culture of philanthropy and deepening their relationships with Healthier Generation and its supporters.

Organizational Leadership

  • Lead a team of employees to mentor, manage, and motivate staff to achieve annual fundraising goals, holding team members to a high standard of performance and accountability.
  • Communicate and effectively manage overall development strategy to/with the team and individual goals to support successful execution of that strategy.
  • Serve on Healthier Generation senior leadership team, collaborating with the CEO and other senior leaders on major organizational initiatives.
  • Act as liaison for the Board Corporate Relations Review Committee, presenting key development updates and building strong relationships with board members.
  • Serve as a compelling external voice and ambassador for Healthier Generation’s mission.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree a plus.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Understanding of Public Health funding landscape and an established network of decision-making partners in the space.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully prospecting, engaging, and cultivating donors – especially national corporations and/or foundations.
  • Strong strategic and analytical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional relationship building and influencing skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a diverse range of audiences.
  • A high degree of cultural competence and belief in the value of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
  • Required frequent travel by car or plane up to 50% of the time.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive fundraising experience, with at least 10 years of nonprofit development experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading annual fundraising campaigns of 15M to 25M
  • At least 7 years’ experience leading and managing teams to achieve organizational results.
  • Demonstrated experience closing significant gifts and grants at the six- and seven-figure levels.
