The Senior Accountant role is a key contributor to the mission by performing accounting functions for the National Office finance team to ensure financial information is processed and prepared accurately and timely.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Manages the monthly bank reconciliation process. Leads research into discrepancies with Finance staff, revenue generating departments, and other departments as necessary.
- Monitor monthly activity to ensure appropriate coding and recording of revenue and payments.
- Performs reconciliation of assigned balance sheet accounts and recognizes, troubleshoots and solves for discrepancies within the reconciliations.
- Assists and provides documentation and support for internal and external audit process.
- Provides guidance to the Accountant on donation gifts, adjustments, journal entries, etc.
- Creates custom reports and queries within general ledger or Excel as needed.
- Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.
- Prepares journal entries for monthly financial activity including but not limited to fixed assets, various liabilities, investments, and purchase card activity.
- Oversees the monthly purchase card reports and ensures reasonableness of expenditures, coding and approvals on submitted reports.
- Leads accounting for frequent flier miles and other in-kind donations received by the National Office.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or related field.
Skills/Experience:
- Knowledge of financial accounting including generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and financial statement preparation to ensure accurate, efficient, timely financial reporting and related processes.
- Strong background in performing balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Knowledge of internal and management control systems.
- Familiarity with audit processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of accounting and information systems applications, preferably in a non-profit environment.
- Exhibits exceptional customer service skills and ability to work professionally with employees and all levels of staff.
- Strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task and handle deadline pressures.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to network with other departments within the organization, as well as externally, regarding various accounting matters.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with a high level of trust and confidentiality and possess strong business ethics.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting or related field.
- Working knowledge of nonprofit organizations is strongly preferred.
- Experience in Blackbaud Financial Edge (accounting general ledger) is helpful.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required, including demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Excel.
