FHI 360 is seeking an entrepreneurial, dynamic, and strategic leader for our U.S. Programs business unit. The U.S. Programs Business Unit is one of four FHI 360 Business Units based in the U.S., with responsibility for the design, execution and evaluation of FHI 360 programs focused on improving the lives of Americans throughout their lifetimes. The business unit works toward this goal through the efforts of five departments that focus on early care and education, disability studies and services, work and learning, school and community services, and social marketing and communication. The business unit has a special focus on populations facing the highest disparities and inequities. Growth of FHI 360's U.S.-based portfolio and our impact on increasing equity in the U.S. is one of five programming priorities established by the FHI 360 Board. The successful applicant will be a proven strategic leader and manager, with a track record of success in the U.S. market. This is a DC-based position that reports to the COO.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Growing the size, scope, and revenue of the business unit, which includes growing the portfolios of the current departments and potentially establishing new areas of work;
  • Setting a vision for the business unit with related strategic goals, implementation activities, performance metrics, and revenue targets;
  • Leading thought leadership activities and efforts to raise the visibility of FHI 360’s U.S.-focused work, including overseeing internal and external marketing/communication;
  • Building lasting relationships with key officials in government agencies, state and local government(s), private sector organizations, and other funders and stakeholders;
  • Leading FHI 360’s strategic priority of advancing equity in the U.S.;
  • Ensuring and overseeing the successful operation of the five departments, including financial performance and project results;
  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight for all organizational operations in the U.S. Programs Business Unit;
  • Responsible for meeting business development targets and overseeing departmental plans;
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and funders to achieve strategic goals;
  • Directs the organization to ensure the attainment of financial and operational goals in support of the company’s overall financial and strategic objectives;
  • Works with Department Directors and other Business Units to identify, manage and mitigate organizational risk and ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and policies;
  • Establishes budgets, short- and long-range objectives and criteria for monitoring progress and measuring success;
  • Directs landscape analyses, development of strategic plans and oversees the approval of proposals, work plans and program reports;
  • Oversees selection, management, and evaluation of staff, ensuring alignment with strategic and programmatic goals;
  • Supports performance management and professional development of direct reports, including ongoing feedback, coaching and career support;
  • Develops and manages BU communication plans, including efforts to broadly and effectively communicate results and evaluation findings of FHI 360's U.S.-based work;
  • Supervises Department Director(s) and BU support team;
  • Serves on various committees and teams both internal and external to the organization.
Educational Background: 
Master’s Degree or its International Equivalent in one of the following: Business Administration, Public Policy, Communications, Education, Environment, Health, Behavioral, Life/Social Sciences or Related Field;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Typically requires a minimum of 12+ years in a leadership role, managing a portfolio of U.S.-focused projects or research, of a significant magnitude (at least $10 million in annual revenue);
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing a business unit, Department or complex project that are strategic in nature and national in scope;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills. Able to read, write, and speak fluent English;
  • Experience leading and supervising teams in complex settings, including remote workers;
  • Experience managing financial and human resources;
  • Proven track record in business development and growing a portfolio of work spanning multiple sectors;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts, and practices of project management, process development and program execution.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equity issues in the United States, and communities of actors working to improve equity;
  • Superior public relations and diplomacy skills and experience;
  • Superior policy development and project management skills;
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills to plan, organize, and manage resources for successful completion of projects;
  • Technical Experience in Education, Employment or Workforce Development, Health, or Social Marketing and Behavior Change (ideally more than one);
  • Experienced at motivating, influencing and collaborating with others;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity in diverse, cross cultural settings.
  • Travel requirements: greater than 25%
