The Chief Information Officer (CIO), reporting to the President and serving as a key member of the Executive Team, defines and delivers IT strategy and capabilities across the enterprise and the Feeding America network of members that drive economies of scale and achievement of the organization’s overall strategic goals.  The CIO will build a high performing team that collaborates and partners with leaders throughout the enterprise, making IT a true business enabler.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as the organization’s senior technology strategist and as a member of Feeding America’s Executive Team.  Provide guidance and vision on the emerging technologies, digital trends and infrastructure advances that are most relevant to the organization’s mission and strategy.
  • Lead the development of a technology strategy and roadmap to drive achievement of the organization’s strategy and current and future business goals. Ensure the I.T. strategy and roadmap are designed to enable growth and transformation at the Feeding America national organization and across the network of member food banks.
  • Partner with leaders in the organization to define and implement specific technology strategies including but not limited to our digital, data, marketing, research, programs, supply chain, development, finance, HR and others necessary to meet our strategic imperatives. Foster alignment of objectives across departmental, network and technology stakeholder groups.
  • Collaborate across the enterprise to define and develop an integrated and cost-effective technology portfolio and architecture.
  • Take a proactive role in developing strategic partners for Feeding America across the technology industry.  Partner with the Chief Development Officer to coordinate these efforts.
  • Create a culture of transparency, collaboration, accountability and commitment to excellence, including a “mission first” mentality across the I.T. team.

Team Development

  • Build a knowledgeable, effective and trusted technology organization combining strong technical competency with effective consulting and customer service skills.  Hire, retain and develop a highly-qualified team of IT professionals.
  • Build strong relationships with key Feeding America departments and their leaders across the enterprise as well as food bank members, instilling a detailed understanding of their issues, challenges and opportunities across the I.T. team. 
  • Establish a vision for the integration of data analytics in support of the business and work with various stakeholders to make analytics capabilities and information widely available to support sound decision making across the enterprise.
  • Actively manage information technology and digital solutions vendors to assure timely delivery of services and solutions. Work with organization leaders to negotiate vendor agreements. Support organization decision making regarding internal versus external (vendor supported) solutions operation and delivery.
  • Develop and maintain a plan that provides for succession and continuity in the most critical IT management positions.

IT Operations

  • Maintain oversight of all technology projects, ensuring that commitments are properly planned, staffed, monitored and reported. 
  • Manage technology operations (e.g., skills, positions, role, experience, headcount, organization structure) to enable the organization to meet the information technology needs of the organization—including both employed, contract, temporary and external resources. 
  • Define and ensure ongoing achievement of service level commitments and KPIs for the delivery of technology services to the organization, including specific, transparent metrics.
  • Lead effective management processes that effectively prioritize technology investments and portfolio management.  Promote and maintain governance processes that ensure integrity of assets and data (including security and access management), systems operation and availability including disaster recovery and compliance with relevant laws and regulations relating to technology information and data.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive enterprise information security program to ensure the integrity and protection of Feeding America systems and information.
  • Lead the design and implementation of IT disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • Coordinate the annual capital budgeting process for the information technology portfolio across all departments; assist the organization in the appropriate assessment of the ongoing cost of information technology. Oversee technology budgets.
  • Organize and advance training and education plans for technology teams and end users (internal and network) to ensure optimized use of technology and standards.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS required or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • 15 or more years of experience in information technology field including 5 plus years in a senior IT leadership role

  • Collaborates Internally & Externally - Strong track record of building consensus and working collaboratively in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Coaches and Develops Talent & Teams - Demonstrated experience building strong teams, including the coaching and development of IT professionals and future IT leaders.
  • Communicates Effectively - Ability to successfully communicate technical information to non-technical audiences and gain the confidence of and credibility with others at all levels.

Required Technical Competencies and Experience

  • Experience leading infrastructure and operations technical services for all IT technology domains, including PCs, networks, telecommunications, servers, security, help desk, etc.
  • Experience leveraging emerging technologies, including digital to support the achievement of evolving business strategies.
  • Builder of strong technology vendor partnerships, able to manage multiple vendor relationships ensuring best performance and strong financial return. 
  • Experience building an enterprise level data analytics capability to service multiple functions across the organization.
