The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a VP Federal Advocacy in our National Center Advocacy office located in Washington, DC .

In this role, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of the American Heart Association's government affairs initiatives aimed at actions to significantly influence national leaders in the public and private sectors, in order to implement policies and programs that support the mission and goals of the AHA. National government affairs activities will be focused primarily at federal government bodies.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Establishes, manages and oversees, directly and through their team, relationships with elected officials, key leaders, government agencies, trade groups, voluntary health agencies, and other stakeholders to position the AHA as a leader and advance the Association’s public policy agenda. Maintains personal portfolio of key DC-based external contacts and relationships essential to the AHA. .
  • Strategically develops and directs federal issue campaigns and advocacy efforts to achieve the Association’s policy priorities. This includes managing the government relations team responsible for federal legislative and regulatory efforts. Recruits, develops and retains top talent with a high level of expertise in strategic campaign planning, coalition building, direct lobbying volunteer engagement, and other advocacy tactics. Oversees contract lobbyists and other external services in support of federal work.
  • Informs, advises and engages AHA executive staff leadership and business units on key Federal legislative/regulatory issues essential to the success of the Association. This includes the AHA’s core, commercial and emerging strategies and business plans as well as key volunteer leaders (especially the president, president-elect, chairman, chairman-elect, and the Advocacy Coordinating Committee) to ensure that public advocacy activities are responsive, coordinated and effective.
  • Engages senior AHA volunteer leadership, National Board and Advocacy Coordinating Committee to establish priorities for each Congress that support the strategic goals and priorities of the AHA and based upon evidence-based developed through science and policy research translation.
  • Collaborates with internal Advocacy senior staff leadership to ensure the integration of federal efforts with the aligned advocacy operations for the entire Association. This includes campaign planning policy research, media advocacy, grassroots advocacy and field operations.
  • Helps secures and effectively manages financial resources available to support federal advocacy operations. This includes identifying, developing and supporting proposals to secure foundation grants and other funding to support AHA Advocacy. Ensures federal advocacy operations are in compliance with all applicable federal statues, registration and reporting requirements.
Educational Background: 
Advanced degree in Political Science, Public Affairs, Public Policy or related area.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of Success experience leading a federal policy or government affairs management operations, including formation of federal legislation.
  • Experience effectively managing a team in an integrated environment.
  • Excellent political acumen and strategist.
  • Excellent communicator and public speaker capable of representing the AHA in front of elected officials, large audiences and media.
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit advocacy and applicable laws.
  • Demonstrated commitment and experience in advancing health equity through public policy.
  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 5% of the time.

  • Proven ability to work in bipartisan manner, but with strong connections within political circles.
  • Demonstrated mastery of innovative new approaching to influencing public policy, including the effective use of digital and social media, data, and unconventional collaborations.
  • Advanced degree and publications, preferably in area of science, law, political science, public affairs or related field.
