As a U.S. Advocacy Campaign Intern, you will support Habitat for Humanity’s first-ever U.S. national advocacy campaign. Today, 1-in- 6 U.S. households pays half or more of their income on a place to live. That is unacceptable. Through the five-year campaign, we commit to mobilizing our local Habitat organizations, our partners, our volunteers and community members across the country to find the solutions and help create the policies that will allow 10 million individuals to meet their most basic needs. The campaign, launching in June 2019, will influence policies and systems at local, state, and national levels to improve housing affordability for low-income Americans. It will elevate the issue of home affordability, inform and mobilize advocates, build the advocacy capacity of U.S. Habitat affiliates, influence federal housing policy and mobilize resources to support its implementation.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work closely with Habitat for Humanity International’s Government Relations & Advocacy team on communication, outreach, mobilization efforts and policy research related to home affordability.
  • Support the involvement of Habitat for Humanity U.S. affiliates in the campaign by developing materials, fact sheets and trainings to build their advocacy capacity.
  • Provide critical backend support for the campaign enrollment process.
  • Contribute to fostering learning across Habitat’s network.
  • Create communications and ensure sharing of information to support the engagement of other Habitat for Humanity International departments.
  • Assist with maintaining the Government Relations and Advocacy communications channels with the network, including social media, as needed.
  • Support project management for the campaign – tracking deliverables, ensuring deadlines are met, etc.
Educational Background: 
Current undergraduate or graduate student
Skills/Experience: 
  • Majors: Communications, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, or other relevant field of study
  • Grade Point Average: 3.0 or better
  • Exceptionally strong communications skills and ability to adapt messaging for various audiences
  • Strong writing and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to take on individual projects as well as work in a team
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and see tasks to completion
  • Comfort with research and analysis
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Consistent attention to detail
  • Experience with social media
  • Microsoft Office savvy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advocacy or policy experience
  • Strong enthusiasm for social justice
  • Interest in affordable housing issues
