FHI 360 seeks a Nutritional Value Chain Specialist for a USAID Uganda Feed the Future program that aims to increase incomes and improve livelihoods of households through agriculture-led economic growth. Activities will increase the institutional capacity of government institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations, and will create incentives for agribusiness to invest in market systems and be more responsive to changes. The Nutritional Value Chain Specialist will oversee and provide technical leadership to promote inclusive nutritional value chain development to generate improved incomes, enhanced dietary diversity, and improved food security for women, youth, and other marginalized groups.

The Nutritional Value Chain Specialist will design assessments to identify strategic points of intervention in the market system and will work with a range of actors, including agribusiness, civil society organizations, and Government of Uganda stakeholders, to reach program objectives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead assessments in target communities to identify socio-economic status, key livelihood systems, and nutrition status, and target value chains with the best potential to deliver improved economic and nutrition outcomes for women and youth.
  • Provide ongoing technical advice and inputs to regional staff to support development of selected value chains and market systems.
  • Provide strategic leadership on improving nutrition policy environment in ways that are sensitive and beneficial to women and youth.
  • Provide guidance and technical support in alignment with Government of Uganda (GoU) nutrition policies and strategies, including USAID policy priorities.
  • Contribute to program/project design, implementation, learning, and monitoring and evaluation through active collaboration with project teams.
  • Help develop internal organizational nutrition training and development of tools, guidelines, standards to improve program quality.
  • Contribute to the learning agenda by writing nutrition background documents, briefs, and presentations, including carrying out relevant literature reviews, landscape analyses, and data analysis.
  • Foster technical capacity building of field staff through technical updates, training opportunities, exchange visits, literature sharing, etc.
  • Engage in nutrition networks and forums to support GoU nutrition priorities and promote involvement of multiple GoU sectors, donors, and the private sector in nutrition and related agricultural initiatives.
  • Participate as the nutrition representative as it relates to nutrition initiatives in Uganda.
  • Maintain diplomatic and high-quality interactions and clear and consistent communications internally and with partners and stakeholders in the field.
Educational Background: 
Masters (MSc) in Agriculture, Rural Development, Nutrition, or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of six years’ experience designing and implementing multi-sector nutrition programs.
  • Demonstrated significant expertise providing technical assistance to project/host country government staff working on nutritional value chain activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of partners with varying interests and priorities in the fields of nutrition and market systems development.
  • Prior experience in the Ugandan agricultural sector desirable, including experience at the community, district, sub-national and national levels.
  • Field experience in value chain development and a strong understanding of nutrition and related policies, strategies and programs.
  • Excellent inter-personal, communication and facilitation skills.
  • Written and oral proficiency in English.
