The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) was created in late 2015 to lead the effort to advance AARP’s local community strategy. The goal of our work in 2018 is to deepen AARP's connection to the 50-plus and enhance impact and relevance with our members, while expanding our ability to deliver on our social change mission. We will do this by:

  • Being seen more frequently, more vibrantly, more actively in communities by more people.
  • Establishing new opportunities to advance our social impact agenda, complementing our federal and state advocacy.
  • Empowering individuals to create meaningful impact in communities.
  • Connecting to priority audiences - interacting with more first time AARP engagers, 50-64 year olds, and multicultural audiences.
  • Broadening engagement - increase frequency of engagement and number of people engaging.
Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides strategic and technical assistance and support for community and volunteer engagement primarily in an assigned region.
  • Collaborates with the RVP and regional advisors to take a holistic view of the region and to ensure effective coordination on community and volunteer engagement. 
  • Ensures seamless communication of work within the region and to problem-solve and brainstorm ideas for common themes emerging from the states.
  • At the direction of Community & Field Director and the VP, strategizes with the RVP to address    community and volunteer specific needs and emerging opportunities.
  • Works closely with the RVP in a matrixed environment to ensure full implementation of a robust spectrum of community and volunteer engagement that includes fully partnered volunteer leaders in accordance with state plan needs. Collaborates with the Community Field Support Team, OCE staff and regional staff and volunteers to initiate and facilitate knowledge transfer and organizational learning of community and volunteer promising practices within states and between states.
  • Provides technical assistance to individual states for engaging and managing volunteers for community engagement activities and local campaigns in collaboration with the assigned OVE advisor.
  • Provides technical assistance to REA units as needed in collaboration with NRTA.
  • Supports state staff and volunteer leaders in planning and executing community and volunteer engagement plans for engaging members, volunteers and community partners.
  • Collaborates with state staff to engage and motivate volunteers to execute AARP work in communities.
  • Travels to states in assigned region to support staff and volunteers by participating at events, hearings, rallies, and other local activities that support AARP priorities in community.
  • Interacts with members and non-members on AARP issues and priorities across assigned states.
  • Serves as community liaison to all CSN Units who want to execute work communities.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the Local Advocacy lead and Campaigns Regional field managers to support execution of campaign plans at the local level.

Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team in a complex environment; willingness to pitch in to help others.
  • Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule and work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting a state or local community.
  • Demonstrated capacity to inspire others to engage in community issues.
  • Strong collaborator, able to adapt quickly to changing situations.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation and physical ability is valued.
  • Previous experience with community organizing and leadership development is desirable.
  • Strong follow-through and attention to detail. 
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and writing skills.
  • Teamwork focused, with strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects at one time.
  • Social media skills preferred.
  • Demonstrates AARP Leadership behaviors in all interactions.
  • Up to 50% travel expected.
