The Associate Director of Philanthropy (ADOP) works closely with the development team to plan, implement, and coordinate effective multi-year strategies and plans for gift prospects, including corporate, foundation, and individual donors, and others philanthropic programs as directed by Director of Development.
The Associate Director of Philanthropy is responsible for managing a portfolio of qualified donors and building strong relationships. Her/his responsibility includes increasing funding from corporations, foundations, institutions and high net-worth individuals/HNWI (minimum of 60% focus on corporations/ foundations/ institutions and 40% focus on HNWI and others) through effective identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. S/he understands and applies complex principles of developing donor strategies and builds strong relationships with a portfolio of new donors and prospects. The Associate Director of Philanthropy provides opportunities for donors to receive recognition and increase future giving. S/he involves and engages appropriate partners in the field and at the Worldwide Office, keeping them apprised of interactions, issues and/or concerns, and addresses questions as needed. S/he is capable of featuring the programs of the Conservancy in detailed terms and can confidently discuss legacy giving opportunities. The ADOP understands project budgets and may build proposal budgets utilizing this knowledge. S/he will develop a referral network as needed and may manage formal and/or informal networks of volunteers and/or supporters. S/he will be required to use the Conservancy’s donor database and may develop proposals.
Duties include:
Development of Pipeline for Corporate and Private Philanthropy
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, steward and retain qualified prospects and donors. Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 qualified relationships, and apply a moves management approach to the portfolio, with a custom cultivation strategy for each donor. Time allocation is 70% for cultivation, 20% for solicitation and 10% for other projects as directed by Director of Development and/ or Country Director.
- Establish a strategic and systematic focus on closing single and multi‐year commitments from corporations/ foundations/ institutions donors.
- Strategically engage board members, organization executives and current donors in peer prospect identification, visits, and closings.
- Routinely network with corporate executives and interact with high‐net worth individuals for the purpose of cultivating personal relationships and developing corporate giving and personal giving. Collaborate with Program colleagues when corporate and private giving interests are expressed.
- Work collaboratively to analyze portfolios and strategize upgrades and to cultivate individual gifts from corporate partner executives.
- Demonstrate a keen sense of curiosity for donors – seeking to “crack the code” of what compels each donor to give substantially by asking the right questions – and able to personally adapt as needed to meet the needs of donors.
- Successfully align partner interests with TNC’s strategy and demonstrate a strong value proposition. Convincingly articulate the unique selling proposition.
Closing Philanthropy Gift
- Responsible for closing Philanthropy gifts of US$ 1 million or equivalent in Indonesia Rupiah annually from Corporate and Private HNWI.
Assist Membership for Venue-In-Kind
- Referral minimum of 6 Venues (venue-in-kind).
- Membership total US$ 50,000 (including venue in-kind and potential donation for membership for 8 months) including in the US$ 1 million overall target.
The Associate Director of Philanthropy will report to the Director of Development and is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Act independently and in supervisor’s stead as needed, exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
- Decisions may have program-wide impact and bind the organization financially or legally.
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
- Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/ legal/ tax) requirements.
- Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and recommending and meeting fundraising goals.
- Manage and implement multiple projects, directing work of staff, managing budget, and setting deadlines.
- May direct or participate in negotiations for complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
- May supervise support or administrative staff or volunteers or supporters.
- Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
- Travel frequently and on short notice, work long and flexible hours as needed.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
- Manage a portfolio of corporate/ foundation/ individual donors. Annual fundraising goal of US$ 1 million or equivalent in Indonesia Rupiah annually from Corporate and Private HNWI.
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents.
- Experience in asking for and closing gifts and/ or donation of $50,000 or more.
- Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, preferably in a large non-profit.
- Experience working with fundraising principles and practices.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in current trends in charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts or planned giving.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Fluent in English (oral and written) cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Ability to design and manage fundraising plans, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans.
- Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
- Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Proven ability to negotiate complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Working knowledge of charitable gift planning.
