Context: The Development Associate develops, recommends, and implements the Chapter’s fundraising programs and activities in order to achieve the Chapter’s fundraising goals.

Scope: Working closely with the chapter staff and volunteer leadership to develop effective fundraising strategies and programs through grant proposals, individual solicitation, events and direct response solicitation techniques.  Ensures the chapter’s compliance with Sierra Club fundraising policies and with relevant grant and foundation requirements.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Plans, organizes and oversees all fundraising events and activities; including appeals, events, grant proposals, donor identification and solicitation, and donor relations in coordination with Chapter Director.
  • Assists the Chapter in the development of the annual fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Develops and carries out solicitation plans.  Identifies funding trends; develops and cultivates new funding sources.
  • Ensures that the chapter operates in compliance with all national, foundation and government and grant requirements.
  • Works closely with national staff to coordinate fundraising efforts when appropriate.   
  • Recruits and trains volunteers to participate in the Chapter’s fundraising programs and activities.  Conducts analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising campaigns and projects.
  • Maintains the fundraising database and monitors the flow of funds, including the acknowledgment and receipt of gifts in coordination with the Chapter Administrative Assistant.
  • Monitors and prepares reports of fundraising progress.  Provides financial progress reports to the Club, Chapter, executive committees, etc.  Performs income forecasting.
  • Writes grant proposals to solicit funding from private, government, and public foundations.
  • Develops and maintains expertise in professional field by reading current literature, working with National, and attending seminars, conferences, and meetings when possible.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 2 years prior experience in designing and managing fund raising campaigns for environmental or other non-profit organizations desired. 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in fundraising campaigns and individual donor solicitation.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Skill in making presentations and public speaking
  • Computer Proficiency
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • IT Proficiency (preferred)
