The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Trademark Paralegal based out of our National Center office located in Dallas, TX!
The Trademarks and Litigation Support Paralegal serves as the central point of contact and an essential resource for the entire organization and its affiliated entities on registration, renewal and enforcement of marks around the world as well as primary management of the administrative support needed by the AHA legal department related to document production, litigation project management, and litigation hold processes. As an integral member of the 10+ attorney legal department, this person will have direct interactions with staff of many levels and the opportunity to educate staff and volunteers on the legal aspects of protecting the AHA’s important IP rights as well as avoiding infringement of the rights of others.
- Reviews and drafts contracts and other legal documents based upon model agreements and AHA standard forms
- Researches issues, finds relevant caselaw, law review articles, statutes, regulations, forms and other legal materials
- Drafts correspondence and memos on specified issues
- Maintains domestic and foreign trademark and copyright registrations and renewals
- On legal issues, the incumbent will be required to resolve routine issues independently; and non-routine situations with guidance from the Assistant General Counsel or Senior Attorneys
- Triages letters from the courts or other attorneys and either refers them to the Assistant General Counsel or one of the Senior Attorneys, or resolves the issue with their help
- Assists the attorneys with litigation and pre-litigation matters, primarily with document protection and collection
- Works with inhouse and outside counsel to manage situations where the AHA’s trademarks are used improperly by 3rd parties
- At least five (5) years of relevant experience
- Knowledge of general legal systems, documents and terminology
- Basic knowledge of Contract Law
- Basic knowledge of Trademark Law and Copyright Law
- Skilled in effective oral and written communications
- Ability to think analytically and logically
- Ability to quickly and accurately conduct legal research on point, and accurately summarize research findings
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Skilled in Microsoft Office suite of programs. Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint and contract management systems desirable
- Experience with litigation, discovery and document production support
