The Communications Internship will provide the opportunity to work collaboratively with Marketing, Communications and Creative Services staff in the Brand Advancement department of the National Office. The intern will participate in a variety of activities including writing, researching and media event planning support. This internship offers hands-on internal and external communications experience. 

This is a part-time (20 hours/week) internship role at the National Office in Phoenix, Arizona from Monday, September 24th, 2018 - Friday, December 14th, 2018. Students are responsible for their own transportation and housing expenses for the summer. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Draft news releases, media alerts and other communications materials
  • Develop daily, weekly and monthly internal communications materials
  • Proofread, fact-check and edit communications materials
  • Conduct research related to major projects, campaigns or events
  • Help identify, plan, and implement new communication strategies, platforms and tactics
  • Build and maintain targeted media contact databases
  • Conduct media outreach
  • Perform print, broadcast and online media monitoring and measurement
  • Support team during crisis management situations
Educational Background: 
The ideal intern will be a Junior or Senior working toward a Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or higher in Communications, Journalism, English or a related field.
Skills/Experience: 

Specific qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of the non-profit sector, media and public relations, either through coursework or employment experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and knowledge of AP Style
  • Digitally savvy - online/social/mobile
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • Proficiency in MS Suite and internet research tools
  • Some volunteer experience preferred, although not required
  • S/he should also have a minimum of 1 year of professional work experience. Knowledge of and experience with the Make-A-Wish mission and service population is preferred.
