Vice President Health Strategies

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President for Houston, with input from the SVP, Health Strategies (dotted line) for the SouthWest Affiliate (SWA), the Vice President, Health Strategies provides strategic direction, leadership, management and technical expertise for the Houston Community Impact staff to ensure execution toward our strategic and Greater Houston region business plans. The Vice President serves as a highly engaged and collaborative leader of the Houston team. The incumbent manages Community Impact implementer staff to provide comprehensive, strategic, and proactive support for programs in the Greater Houston region. This role will provide input to the SVP of Houston, Deputy Executive Director for Houston, SVP Health Strategies Team for the SWA and corresponding mission VPs on executing market goals and budgets. Also responsible for ensuring qualified staff are hired, trained, supervised, evaluated and developed on a consistent, frequent basis.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Works with SVP of Houston and SVP, Health Strategies for SWA to develop and implement a multi-year Business Plan for Houston, with a specific focus on Houston metro, incorporating specific strategies to guarantee activation and dramatic impact towards the market's health strategies and development goals.
  • Recruits and manages volunteer and strategic alliances/partnerships to support the activities of the market. Ensures that strategies are implemented to manage key relationships. Supports the SVP of Houston to meet Houston Board objectives and main conduit and contact for Board volunteers.
  • Build a network of meaningful volunteer partnerships to advance the mission of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA). Provide timely direction, framework and resources to volunteers while at the same time relying on their expertise, abilities and willingness to leverage their networks to drive the goals of the organization. Share meaningful opportunities for volunteers so they can utilize their passion to further the mission of the organization. Give recognition to volunteers for their efforts to help ensure their success and drive satisfaction. Hold each other accountable, both volunteers and staff, while being accessible and build collaborative staff-volunteer partnerships that are based on a foundation of mutual trust. Create a collaborative environment where staff from various functions work together to achieve results across health, revenue and volunteerism goals for the organization.
  • Manages the Community Impact implementer staff in the local market. Collaborates with corresponding VPs/subject matter experts in goal setting and management of staff. Management includes identifying and driving toward goals, performance standards, coaching and counseling staff; interviewing, hiring and training staff; evaluating staff performance and empowering team members to lead and champion the health needs of the market.
  • Aligns the mission of the AHA with the revenue goals of the market for maximum organizational reach and impact. Identifies opportunities for driving greater revenue based on the health work being conducted in the market. In conjunction with development staff, ensures health related activities are incorporated into fundraising activities and events.
  • Drives collaboration with development and health strategies staff in the affiliate around mission related goals.
  • As a member of the market's management team, consistently models the AHA's leadership competencies and values in advancing the AHA/ASA's mission and achievement of revenue and health impact goals. Promotes collaboration among and between all functions and across divisions. Integrates and collaborates with all staff across the market and functions to most effectively support and achieve AHA/ASA initiatives and priorities.
  • Provides training, consultation and implementation assistance to local staff on the Association’s health goals and priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in community health, public health, health marketing or other related fields preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 5 years’ progressive community health experience.
  • Proven ability to recruit, mobilize and manage volunteers.
  • At least five years’ supervisory experience.
  • Ability to interact across multiple acculturation levels and socio-economic groups.
  • Proven strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to conduct and lead effective meetings with internal and external clients.
  • Self-motivated and highly effective organization and analytical skills.
