Associate Government Relations Manager

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Government Relations Manager in our affiliate office located in Washington D.C.

The Associate Government Relations Manager is responsible for managing legislative issues and coalitions focused on tobacco use, air quality, healthy equity, women's issues, and specific CVD disease states or elements of the heart diseae and stroke care continuum. These would include coalitions or issues focused on congenital heart disease, sudden cardiac arrest, and women's health equity, to name a few. The Associate would also provide assistance to the Government Relations Manager with nonadministrative activities, such as drafting position statements, letters, and other materials and would represent AHA at meetings with hill staff upon request.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Represents the AHA on coalitions where we do not take on a leadership role.
  • Draft letters, position statements, fact sheets, and other materials upon request.
  • Monitor relevant legislative and regulatory activities within specific areas of focus.
  • Attend and report back on events (both legislative and otherwise) focused on key issue areas upon request.
  • Conducts background research and investigate issues upon request.
  • Provides assistance on federal advocacy website.
  • Provides input for internal and external materials as requested.
  • Provides administrative assistance with event planning.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, History, Sociology, related field or equivalent work experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Strong organization and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of federal legislative and executive branch procedures and policies.
  • Initiative and ability to identify issues or events of interest to AHA advocacy.

  • Internship or work experience on Capitol Hill with an advocacy group or in a federal agency.
