The Development Research Associate is part of Development Services’ Prospect Development Team and works with department leadership and fundraisers across the country.  The position enhances Audubon’s fundraising efforts by providing research, analysis, and strategy recommendations for existing and prospective donors, with a focus on Institutions, Major Gifts, and Planned Giving. 

The Development Research Associate would ideally work out of our National office in New York City. However, we will consider a remote work arrangement with qualified candidates based elsewhere.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conduct reactive research – including preparation of event bios, in-depth profiles for meetings, and other research reports – with an emphasis on capacity, interests, and relationships to assist with strategy
  • Using wealth and data analytics screenings, verify individuals in the database with the potential to make major gifts to Audubon
  • Identify new prospects from the proactive analysis of donor lists, relationships of board members, articles about the industry, philanthropy/grant databases, and other sources
  • Monitor news alerts on major donors and prospects
  • Perform data entry to ensure research is integrated into the organization’s database
  • Maintain an active awareness of the latest trends in philanthropy and the prospect development field; be proactive in seeking out new and innovative ideas and pitching them to the team.
  • Assist on special projects and perform other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and minimum of three to five years of prospect research or related experience required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with online search strategies using both public search engines and paid sources such as LexisNexis, NOZA, Foundation Directory Online, WealthEngine, and Relationship Science
  • Ability to interpret and summarize a high volume of information including SEC documents, 990 tax forms, real estate records, search engine results and news articles
  • Experience developing prospecting strategies to uncover and prioritize new potential donors with capacity and interest
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
  • Familiarity with fundraising databases, experience with Salesforce a plus
  • Excellent communication, organization, analytical, time management, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work both individually and as part of a team as well as to work under tight deadlines and with shifting priorities
  • Knowledge of research ethics and confidentiality, and commitment to professional development
