Fall Humanitarian Data Management & Analysis Intern

Candidate will support data management and analysis efforts, including data visualization, for Department of Humanitarian Response (DHR).  S/he will collaborate with other Business Teams to ensure that DHR is using best available practices in regard to data management and visualization, and will be responsible for training members of the team in the use of Excel and Power BI  as requested.  S/he will help to streamline and document DHR portfolio analysis processes, and make recommendations regarding future enhancements.  S/he may be asked to support other IT needs of the Humanitarian Business Team in support of improved response capacity.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Humanitarian Data Management & Analysis Intern will support enhanced data management and data visualization for the SCUS Department of Humanitarian Response team, and take on other specific IT-related projects as needed.  The intern will evaluate strengths and weaknesses of Excel and Power BI (as the two software packages currently available for data management and visualization purposes, and conduct research on other software options available on the market. S/he will prepare reports and presentations that include data analysis for DHR staff as requested, and support development of automated processes that allow for ongoing data review.

Specific tasks assigned will include:

  • Conduct comparative analysis of Excel and Power BI
  • Suggest enhancements to various databases and knowledge management tools
  • Conduct portfolio analysis including data visualization using AMS and Agresso
  • Train HBT staff members on use of Excel and Power BI
  • Conduct research on other data/business management software and prepare comparative analysis
  • Support DHR teams as requested with IT-related tasks to support technological innovation

In addition to the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the IT-related functioning of the team, the intern will gain exposure to and experience in the humanitarian response activities of a global relief to development organization.  They will gain a broad understanding of humanitarian program development and the programmatic and operational issues related to responding to the needs of conflict and natural disaster-affected populations, including displaced and refugee populations.  Additionally, interns will have opportunities through the life of the internship to learn about the work done across Save the Children related to Health, Education, Livelihoods, and Child Protection in development and humanitarian settings, and learn how food and cash are being used in emergency response programming to effectively meet urgent needs. 

Educational Background: 
an individual must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate academic program and able to receive credit from his/her college or institution. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong computer and research skills, including strong experience with various data management software packages, and an affinity and aptitude for IT solutions. 
  • Interest in emergency response activities and modalities related to rapid onset and chronic emergency response, and an
  • Interest in developing and supporting IT solutions.  
  • Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
