Works with staff and volunteers in the state to create positive social change and deliver value to AARP members through enhanced visibility, media presence, volunteer capacity, building community partnerships, and delivering AARP programs and activities in the Greater Orlando Area.  Develops and provides strategic leadership for AARP activities and events in the Greater Orlando Area.  Supports local and national AARP advocacy efforts and campaigns in the Greater Orlando Area.  Consults with Advocacy team on supporting the effort to build greater grassroots and key contacts capacity and fostering appropriate relationships with elected officials in the Greater Orlando Area.  Keeps abreast of all legislation impacting the 50+ community.  Engages with local community leaders, influencers and community organizations and partners to foster strong relationships and collaborative partnerships that enhance AARP’s relevance and presence in the Greater Orlando Area.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serves as a bi-lingual member of the state team and works with other state staff, key and lead volunteers in the development of initiatives that create strong AARP presence that are consistent with national policy standards and mandates in the Greater Orlando Area.  Assists management in the development of strategic outreach plans, initiatives and campaigns focused in the Greater Orlando Area.  Helps to organize and maintain effective statewide coalitions and partnerships dealing with strategic issues and organizational focus.
  • Provides leadership to staff and volunteers in the Greater Orlando Area to develop a meaningful organization of involved and active volunteers that impacts AARP Florida’s presence in the community and public policy at the state and national level with our Outreach efforts. Consults with management to foster, build, and maintain strong grassroots and key contacts organization and leadership that have a real and sustained impact on behalf of AARP Florida’s goals and objectives.
  • Leads community outreach engagements and campaigns in the Greater Orlando Area, and supports the Advocacy team with coordination of grassroots and key contacts activity in support of AARP’s congressional agenda. 
  • Assists in the development of an assigned budget and guides strategy development through goal setting, priority ranking, community, political and environmental scanning, and advocacy outcome measurement, in relation to the national and local dashboard goals and objectives for the Greater Orlando Area.
  • Represents AARP in the Greater Orlando Area before community leaders, partners, policy makers and those who promulgate rules and regulations in the state.  Focuses on active engagement and involvement of volunteers and members who are impacted by the issue at hand.  In consultation with Communications, informs members and the public on issues of concern to AARP.
  • Recruit, orient, train, evaluate, and manage volunteers in the Greater Orlando Area.  Provides coaching, mentoring, technical assistance, and skill-building.  Additionally, provides or arranges for training on substantive issues requiring in-depth expertise and knowledge, with the support of management.
  • Demonstrates AARP values and Leadership Behaviors in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Bi-lingual (Spanish) required.  Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy Administration, Law, Business, Social or human sciences, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position. 
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the Greater Orlando Area’s political and community service environment (e.g., community service leaders, partners, organizations, critical local and state-wide community service needs, legislative leaders, government officials, major stakeholders, etc.). 
  • Previous community outreach, social service, government relations and grassroots organizing experience strongly encouraged.
  • Must be knowledgeable about the Greater Orlando community. Ideal candidate should be aware of potential collaborative partners that are not already a part of local AARP. 
  • Individual should also be well informed regarding the changes and nuances of Orlando. 
  • Travel required at least 60% of work time.
