The Founders Affiliate of the American Heart Association is recruiting for a Quality & Systems Improvement Internship: Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Failure, and Stroke (Get with the Guidelines) part-time temporary internship opportunity in the Healthcare Quality and Systems Improvement Department. This paid, temporary internship position includes an onsite assignment with Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, NJ. This position will work 9-12 hours a week and will be paid $12.00 hourly through the grant funding.There are no benefits associated with this opportunity.

This position is ideal for a college graduate-level intern to join our Healthcare Quality and Systems Improvement team to work on our Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Failure, and Stroke (Get with the Guidelines) programs. This internship will combine client-focused responsibilities with data abstraction and analysis skills training. We are looking for applicants who possess technical aptitude and attention to detail. A degree in a related field and prior internship experience preferred.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Your Key Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to): 

  • clinical data abstraction, entry and coordination with assigned hospital clinical team; Learn Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) modules for Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Failure, and Stroke, including coding definitions and identification of appropriate information sources from hospital records; maintain current HIPAA compliance training and adhere to ethical standards consistent with training; review individual and aggregate data for patient outliers, prepare reports and analyses demonstrating progress, roadblocks, and appropriate recommendations for project success and/or conclusions as requested.
  • In this role, you will report to Kimberly our Director Quality and Systems Improvement in NJ and will work with staff and clinical teams at the assigned hospital.
Educational Background: 
College degree in a health care related field from an accredited university, preferred. College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree.
Related fields can include: pre-medicine, public health, healthcare administration, nursing or other technical healthcare fields.
Skills/Experience: 
  • As the ideal candidate for the Quality & Systems Improvement Internship position we need you to bring your experience in hospital, clinical, quality improvement or EMS setting as well as experience with hospital records and data abstraction.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in healthcare: clinical or quality improvement. This experience may also count towards satisfying this position’s educational requirement.
