The Basic Education Senior Coordinator will support the implementation of Save the Children’s education portfolio in Puerto Rico. Save the Children’s education program includes direct support to schools, summer education programs, after-school initiatives, literacy and numeracy initiatives, and other community-based interventions targeting children in K through 8th grades. Our education programming focuses on supporting children and their caregivers in maintaining and improving learning levels of children in Puerto Rico, and the ability to bounce back following shocks, like natural disasters, by enhancing coordination and strengthening community-based and common-wealth education systems. This position will report to the Basic Education Senior Specialist

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Support the overall Education Program with assessment of identified educational facilities for basic education activities, trainings, and support.  
  • Assist in the design of program assessments, objectives, activities, and implementation plans.
  • Coordinate the establishment of afterschool programs, tutoring, literacy, and additional basic education support activities as appropriate and relevant.
  • Oversight and monitoring of ongoing basic education activities in targeted communities and facilities.
  • Ensure that education interventions are informed by and integrated with other core sectors, including and ensuring that issues for child protection are raised and addressed.
  • Contribute to the development of a monitoring and evaluation system education programs.
  • Ensure that Save the Children's work is coordinated with efforts of other organizations, agencies and relevant government authorities.
  • Prioritize and plan assessment of education facilities serving our target age-range and will contribute to the development of the childcare and school response and recovery plan.
  • Help identify and build strategic partnerships with education partners (including school boards, childcare networks, after-school programs, etc.).
  • Support in assessments and identification of critical unmet needs.
  • Support the sub grant process for any education partners.
  • Lead and monitor education activities; prepare field visit plans and supervision checklists in advance of trips.
  • Prepare timely program reports for education activities and completed distributions of education related materials.

Educational Background: 
High School or Technical/Vocational Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-4 years of relevant experience, including delivery of educational programs to K-6 students
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects
  • Excellent Spanish communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent personal organizational skills, including time management, and ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Resource management, training, capacity building, coaching, and mentoring skills
  • Willingness to work and travel to challenging and remote environment and requirements
  • Strong people management skills/experience and proven ability to create an environment which encourages team-working and motivates a team across various geographical areas
  • Ability to meet government and federal agencies requirements for working with children
  • Good analytical skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-4 years’ experience in area of expertise as (Education, Primary and Secondary, Child Development)
  • College/advanced degree in related area ( Education, Social Worker, Education Psychology)
  • Proficiency in conversational English, both written and verbal, is highly desired
