This role will be responsible for launching a new fundraising volunteer program at Save the Children. The Director of Volunteer Engagement will build the volunteer program’s base by focusing on recruitment and stewardship of new volunteers. This position will also be responsible for building the program’s overall infrastructure to support Save the Children’s peer-to-peer events, DIY engagement, corporate partner program, social council, emergency deployment, and fundraising efforts with opportunities to expand the program as we grow.
Create the Foundation and Infrastructure for a Volunteer Program (40%)
- Drive the launch of a new volunteerism strategy in support of a new P2P signature event and other P2P programs with input from internal departments and external agencies
- Identify inter-departmental cross-over opportunities and incorporate into volunteer recruitment plan
- Develop achievable goals and KPIs for short-term and long-term
- Work closely with community engagement team to identify priorities for volunteer engagement
- Create strategic outreach and on-boarding plan, and timeline for roll-out
- Develop online portal and database management systems
- Monitor trends and best practices in volunteerism amongst our peers and other organizations
- Complete detailed reports, evaluate data, assess alternatives, and make decisions and or recommendations to meet recruitment and fundraising goals
- Build digital and social media strategy to compliment strategic recruitment plan, and to generate ‘buzz’ and increase awareness of Save the Children opportunities
- Ideate long-term plan to expand the volunteerism program throughout the agency
Recruit and Steward Volunteers (25%)
- Create and execute a robust communication stream and cultivation strategy
- Develop recruitment plans with input from internal departments and external agencies and manage the execution of those recruitment strategies
- Develop and implement acquisition plans for recruitment and stewardship
- Identify and reach out to community groups to increase event awareness and volunteer recruitment
- Meet in-person with STC constituents, donors looking for deeper engagement, and any other interested parties that should be stewarded to volunteering
- Host trainings and offer resources to empower volunteers to be successful
- Educate volunteers on fundraising opportunities for STC
Develop Training & Recognition Programs (20%)
- Build an infrastructure for support and recognition of volunteers for new signature event
- Appoint volunteer leaders
- Develop, train, and support volunteer leadership to raise event acquisition and conversions
- Create specific volunteer roles for each event and communicate goals/training for each role
- Recognize volunteer engagement and contribution post event
Coordinate and Supervise Event Day Logistics (15%)
- Contribute to event day planning and logistics
- Create Volunteer roles needed for each event
- Coordinate and Supervise volunteers on event day(s)
- Minimum of 7-10 years of recent and related experience to volunteerism, fundraising, and/or campaigning
- Experience with athletic events (races, fundraising walks, stair climbs, etc.) either as a producer or a participant
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and vision, and able to inspire collaboration and effective engagement
- Strong organizational, detail, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent written communication, public speaking, and customer service skills
- Ability to train volunteers and motivate supporters
- Ability to be a self-starter, work independently, to work under supervision and to work in a team-based goal-oriented environment
- Skilled with PC and Microsoft Office
- Ability to effectively delegate and manage responsibility
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours when needed to meet potential volunteers and constituents in person
- Ability to travel to events, and be the on-the-ground volunteer leadership (30-40%)
- Enjoys networking and building relationships and connects easily with a broad range of demographics.
- Versed in digital marketing and social outreach platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat, Google ad optimization, Adwords, etc.)
- During specific events, ability to work with possible lifting up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand for 16 hours daily over the course of the event. Ability to work at varied hours; event preparation can entail early morning and late night activity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience launching a program from the ground up; experience with building volunteer programs is a plus
- Experience with CRM processes, and/or using Convio, Luminate, Sphere and TeamRaiser fundraising programs is a plus.
