Reporting to the President & CEO, and working closely with the Executive Vice President & COO and the Senior Management Team, the Vice President for Resource Development designs and implements a comprehensive and dynamic private fundraising and business development plan commensurate with the strategic direction of Save the Children. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Vice President for Resource Development will lead the organization in the preparation and implementation of a multi­ year fundraising plan that includes major donors, planned giving, foundations and trusts, special events, corporate giving and other activities to raise over $190 Million per year in addition to approximately $25 million (through 2020) for the agency’s centennial campaign.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversee, lead and support the following business development and fundraising teams in achieving planned results and maximize returns, while minimizing costs in the following areas:
    • Individual Philanthropy: Annual & Planned Giving and Major Gifts
    • Corporate Partnerships
    • Foundations & Trusts, and
    • Special Events
  • Provide strategic direction for a staff of approximately 120 fundraising professionals; ensure that the Resource Development team operates as a cohesive and productive unit with shared goals, shared aspiration, and high morale in achieving both unit and team goals; lead the group to develop fund-raising priorities that maximize the net revenue results of the entire
  • Embrace, create the conditions for, and insist upon a harassment-free workplace that is safe for both our employees and the people we serve.
  • Drive a cohesive resource development plan working with the heads of domestic and international programs, which includes government and private funding strategies through a matrixed business team structure.
  • Co-lead with the Chief Marketing Officer the Save the Children Board of Directors’ Development Committee.
  • Support the CEO and board liaison in appropriate fundraising activities and help drive results in resources raised through these activities.
  • Understand the overall financial status of the agency including the budgetary process; ensure that sound financial controls are in place within the RD unit and that funds are appropriately expended to support institutional advancement activities.
  • Support and work closely with the Vice President, Centennial Campaign in the execution and achievement of a $100M fundraising goal.
Educational Background: 
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • You have a minimum 15-20 years of experience in fundraising or new business development.
  • You have advanced technical proficiency with demonstrated success in fundraising and new business development, with a demonstrated ability to design effective programs and deliver the targets.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and collaborate with an integrated, interdisciplinary team of professionals in a goal-oriented environment.
  • Must have a track record of partnering across an organization and listening to the point of view and perspective of multiple stakeholders.
  • A person who recognizes the potential of Save the Children and is attracted to and is passionate about its mission.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and closely with Senior Management colleagues as well as a Boards of Trustees.
  • Must have the highest integrity, sound judgment, and a demonstrated respect for diversity in all forms.
  • Ability to convey Save the Children's vision and generate commitment to Save the Children ideals and programs from a wide variety for external donors, as well as internal staff.
  • Entrepreneurial, high-energy, yet pragmatic leadership style to excite and motivate a team, as well as the ability to hire, train, motivate and retain a strong management staff to help him/her build a fundraising organization seen as a great place to work; able to lead by example rather than hierarchy.
  • Well-honed strategic thinking skills and the ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to revise strategies as necessary.
  • Model a balance of self-confidence and humility; who will argue persuasively for his/her view but in the face of new information, business realities, and compelling logic will be open to modification and compromise.
