The Social Marketing and Communication (SMC) department has distinctive competence in a science-based approach to social marketing and communication to address public health and other challenges in the United States. SMC currently implements a diverse portfolio of social marketing, public relations, communication, and training and technical assistance projects in the U.S. that are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, private associations, and foundations. In the past decade, our team has worked on issues such as diabetes, emergency and pandemic preparedness, obesity prevention, sexual health, HIV/AIDS, cancer, asthma, immunizations, violence prevention, access to health care, and tobacco control and cessation.

Job Summary / Responsibilities:

The Communication and Marketing Manager will provide communication and marketing expertise across several SMC projects including the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP). The National DPP is a partnership of public and private organizations working to reduce the growing problem of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The National DPP works to make it easier for people with prediabetes to participate in affordable, high-quality lifestyle change programs to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes and improve their overall health. The Communication and Marketing Manager will support various communication, marketing, and community engagement/mobilization strategies and tactics, reporting to the Project Director. This team member will play a key role in developing informational and promotional materials, marketing and dissemination plans, and webinars for various audiences including individuals at-risk for developing type 2 diabetes (especially Medicare beneficiaries/adults 65+), employers and insurers who can expand opportunities for participation in CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs by offering them as a covered health benefit, health care professionals who screen their patients for prediabetes and can refer them to a CDC-recognized lifestyle change program, and National DPP lifestyle change program providers, and organizations (especially those in undeserved areas) that deliver a CDC-recognized lifestyle change program.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is able to quickly get up to speed on new topic areas and issues. In addition to the National Diabetes Prevention Program, the Communication and Marketing Project Manager will support other health communication projects, as assigned. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversee communication efforts including development of communication and marketing plans to connect with target audiences through traditional and digital communication channels.
  • Lead the development of content for print and digital communication materials, videos, webinars and infographics. Provide overall quality control for all products.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify client needs and generate innovative ideas to engage key audiences.
  • Provides technical input into translating research into persuasive communication products.
  • Manage digital communication channels including websites and social media channels.
  • Ensures timely implementation and monitors project activities against work plans.
  • Coordinate with graphic designers, subcontractors, researchers, other team members and partners, and clients to establish workflows and timelines.
  • Contributes actively to business development efforts.
Educational Background: 
Master's degree preferred; Bachelor's degree required
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications:

  • 5-8 years of experience with communication, marketing, public relations, advertising, promotion, or other communications methods.
  • Experience working in diabetes, with Medicare beneficiaries/adults 65+, and/or with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services a plus.
  • Experience with supporting communication projects for U.S. Government clients or health related non-profit organizations. Past experience working on communication projects for CDC a major plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health communication and/or social marketing principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in translating public health science into persuasive copy for consumers and professionals.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing experience.
  • Strong program/project management skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and creatively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritize, and competently manage a variety of activities with multiple deadlines.
