The Director, Individual Giving is responsible for devising and executing a major gifts strategy that support the growth and health of National Geographic Society’s revenue objectives and secures individual contributions of $100,000 to $1M+. This will also include gifts for the organization’s capital campaign. Working with a dynamic and collaborative Development team, the Director will qualify donors, help build the donor base, create and implement cultivation strategies for new and existing major gift candidates, solicit annual gifts, and thoughtfully steward donors. The Director will manage and motivate a team of professional front-line fundraising staff.
- Together with the SVP of Partnerships and the VP of Philanthropic Partnerships, set yearly revenue targets for major gifts. (10%) In concert with Research, move a portfolio of donors and prospects through quality, strategic contacts and face-to-face visits to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors to successfully close gifts ranging from $100,000 to $1M+.
- Develop and coordinate strategies to meet or exceed fundraising goals and other measures of success. Within portfolio management, dedicate 80% of their time to candidates within priority programmatic areas—including the capital campaign, and 20% of their time on other donors. (40%)
- Develop and maintain a thorough and accurate understanding of National Geographic programs and funding priorities (capital campaign, etc.) in order to effectively connect donors and prospects to the organization. Be able to effectively communicate those priorities in writing and in conversation to different kinds of people and successfully match donor's philanthropic interests to funding needs. Adapt written materials, including briefings, solicitations, and acknowledgements in a quality consistent with National Geographic standards. (20%)
- Supervise a professional frontline fundraising staff. Provide leadership to direct reports and ensure coordination with all asks. Ensure that team is building the major gift pipeline to meet current goals and helping to strengthen the sustainability of future major gift efforts. (20%)
- Utilize and update Raiser’s Edge by recording activities and contacts on an ongoing basis consistent with department policies. Ensure all direct reports follow these procedures as well. (10%)
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
- 10+ years of development experience with donor/donor candidate management and gift solicitation, including a proven track record of closing gifts and stewarding donor relationships and at least 5+ years of management experience. Dedication to practicing creative and reliable stewardship. Sophisticated communication skills and demonstrated ability to elevate donors to increase giving and attract new donors. Ability to motivate staff.

- Must be energetic, self-directed and able to work confidently and successfully in a fast-paced development operation. Candidates should be politically astute, dynamic people who can inspire donors and donor candidates with their intelligence, commitment, and professionalism. Experienced traveler. Solid working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or similar. Ability to motivate staff to meet or exceed goals. Successful candidates should be self-motivated and capable of working proactively and independently. Proven track record of building and managing meaningful relationships with donors that result in philanthropic gifts ranging from $100,000 - $1,000,000+. Candidates should have successful experience working collaboratively with leadership volunteers and senior staff, and be committed to driving activity that achieves or exceeds individual and team goals.
