Construction Supervisor

Pre-Construction Planning:

• Be familiar with HFHI House Design Criteria requirements; maintain and implement the BAHFH House Design Criteria Policy.
• Work with the leadership team to develop an overall construction plan and schedule for each build calendar year.
• Arrange for site plans, elevation certificates, surveys, and build permits. Check with local authorities to guarantee availability of gas, water, sewer and power.
• Order temporary power and ensure storm water pollution prevention compliance.
• Determine exact location of permanent power post before ordering foundation services. Driveway and house foundation will be poured simultaneously.
• Provide input for material take off and issue purchase orders
• Communicate as-built drawings and help maintain working drawings.
• Advocate for accessible and energy-efficient housing. Prior to each build conduct a design conference with key trade partners to ensure the most efficient, effective and cost conscious/affordable design that incorporates energy savings and healthy environmental features. Propose new construction methods and new building materials.

Construction Volunteer Management:

• Assess material needs and ensure delivery prior to each work day.
• Estimate crew size needed – max/min. Coordinate manpower needs with Volunteer Manager in charge of work crew schedule.
• Lead by example and seek opportunities to engage and empower others.
• Supervise house leaders and construction crews. Utilize existing skilled persons maximizing the benefit of their talents.
• Work with Safety and Volunteer Manager to follow and continuously implement the safety program (Injury Prevention Program –IPP) to comply with Texas and U.S. OSHA standards.
• Plan, schedule and lead staff and volunteer training events as needed.
• Communicate and delegate tasks to house leaders and regular volunteers.

Construction Procedure:

• Lead construction effort on multiple sites; follow construction plan and allocate additional time to most needed project site.
• Ensure each shift has a house leader in charge. Take charge in absence of a house leader.
• Ensure each site has water, ice, first aid kit, and safety equipment such as gloves, protection glasses, and ear plugs.
• Enforce volunteer sign in procedures and document all incidents.
• Assign power tools according to volunteer skill level and clearance.
• Provide site safety orientation and respond to site emergencies.
• Inspect site to ensure personnel safety.
• Assign jobs to subcontractors and ensure timely and accurate completion.
• Order building inspections and ensure that homes are built to code.
• Use in-kind material and labor whenever possible.
• Check all construction against windstorm and other specs on site.
• Organize volunteers into assigned daily work crews.
• Organizes work plan for house leaders and volunteer crews.
• Organize skilled volunteers into crew leadership positions.
• Be readily available to answer questions and catch mistakes.
• Schedule and interface with inspectors (city, windstorm, plumbing, electrical).
• Maintain job sites clear of litter and debris.
• Responsible for projects until 100% complete and sold to homeowner.
• Quickly and effectively, handle any warranty repairs and quality assurance claims or issues.

Materials and Equipment Handling:

• Perform tool inventory checks on a monthly basis.
• Maintain tool inventory organized, inventoried, and readily available.
• Have proper tools on site (special and common).
• Communicate material needs with Procurement Manager.
• Check delivered materials for meeting requirements.
• Check tools for maintenance and repairs.
• Maintain vehicle clean and conduct preventive maintenance checks.
• Maintain vehicle registration and insurance in order.
• Partner with ReStore to eliminate excess waste, utilizing reclaimed and recycled materials whenever possible.
• Notify any material surplus to Procurement Manager and comply with material return procedure.

Management of Information:

• Implement and enforce volunteer registration log.
• Sign off on material delivery slips and copy Purchaser and Accountant.
• Deliver project status reports including incident logs.
• Revise building plans and timelines.
• File building permits, solicit additional inspections.
• Maintain construction records in order at main offices.
• Turn in volunteer logs to Volunteer Manager.
• Review the Affiliate Safety plan annually and ensure that all policies and procedures are implemented to maintain a safe volunteer environment.
