My Density Matters is a nonprofit organization focused on educating women about breast density and how it affects breast cancer screening. Breast density matters for two important reasons.
First, dense breast tissue increases a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. Women with extremely dense breast tissue have a 4 to 6 times higher risk of developing breast cancer compared to women with low breast density.
Second, dense tissue can make cancer harder to see on a mammogram because both dense tissue and breast cancer tumors appear white on the image. For some women this means cancer can be present but missed through standard mammogram screening alone.
Approximately 40-45% of women over age 40 have dense breast tissue, yet many women do not know their breast density, or that they need to advocate for additional screening to ensure their breast cancer is found early, while still curable. The earlier breast cancer is found, the higher the likelihood of survival.
My Density Matters works to close this awareness gap by educating women via direct education (nationwide zoom corporate presentations, online events, maintaining a growing social media presence, health fairs, and 3-4 conferences per year). We also empower women through magazine articles, podcasts, documentaries, and occasional TV coverage. My Density Matters also works with partners such as the Breast Cancer Early Detection Coalition, and the American Cancer Society National Breast Cancer Roundtable.
