About Us
Mission:

Drama Club’s mission is to provide theater training and positive mentor relationships to New York City youth throughout each step of their journey through the criminal justice system: detention placement and aftercare. We are committed to providing our city’s most vulnerable and overlooked youth the opportunity to laugh, be seen and heard, and cultivate life skills via improvisational theatre.

Programs:

Drama Club was founded in 2013, and over the course of the last four years, has grown from a single class in one secure detention center to a non-profit organization serving five sites across the juvenile justice and criminal justice systems. Currently, Drama Club provides programming to adolescent boys and girls at Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brooklyn (Est. 2013), Horizon Juvenile Center in the Bronx (Est. 2014), the Robert N. Davoren Center (RNDC) for adolescent boys at Rikers Island (Est. 2015), the Rose M. Singer Center (RMSC) for adolescent girls and young women at Rikers Island (Est. 2016).  In 2017, we expanded our services to The Door, which serves systems-involved, homeless, and LGBTQ youth.  While class is open to all members at The Door, youth who have worked with Drama Club while incarcerated can join us post-incarceration, taking on paid internship roles while being exposed to The Door programs such as health care, academic and legal assistance, immigration support and free meals.

Why Work For Us?:

Drama Club is a small but fast-growing nonprofit dedicated to the development of NYC's most vulnerable youth. We are a committed team that is profoundly dedicated to the collaborative process. We uphold the following values in our classrooms and offices: Love, “Yes And”, Equity, Diversity and Humor.

Working for Drama Club is an "all hands on deck" experience but also deeply rewarding. As it is our goal to become a national network of youth-led programs, the young people, and their well-being, are ever-present in all decision-making.
