BE THE VOICE A SURVIVOR HEARS FIRST

When a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault reaches out in the middle of the night, someone needs to answer. Your Safe Haven, Inc. (YSH) is looking for calm, caring Part-Time On-Call Advocates to provide 24/7 crisis support from home, with in-person response when the situation requires it.

You will answer our crisis line, help survivors with safety planning, and explain their rights and options.

We prefer candidates who can both answer the crisis line and respond in person when needed, for example accompanying a survivor at the hospital or responding to an emergency. However, candidates who can provide phone-only support are also encouraged to apply and will be considered.

Why join us

  • Meaningful work. You help YSH provide consistent, survivor-centered care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Flexible scheduling. Choose on-call shifts that fit your life, and we will work with you to find a schedule that works for both of us.
  • Paid, thorough training. We pay you for all 80 hours of advocate training and a 10-hour practicum, so no prior experience is required.
  • You are never alone. A supervisor is available by phone for consultation, and we provide debriefing after challenging calls.

ABOUT YOUR SAFE HAVEN, INC.

Your Safe Haven, Inc. is a growing nonprofit crime victim resource center serving Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Through advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals, YSH supports survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and related crimes. Our work is grounded in respect, compassion, and integrity, and every team member, including our On-Call Advocates, is part of a coordinated response that keeps survivors' care timely, consistent, and compassionate.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

All On-Call Advocates

  • Answer hotline calls during your scheduled on-call shifts.
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention, safety planning, and emotional support.
  • Help survivors understand their rights and options, and connect them with community resources.
  • Support follow-up safety planning and next steps after a crisis.
  • Document each client interaction accurately and on time, and hand off cases smoothly to our full-time advocates.
  • Keep strict confidentiality and clear professional boundaries.

Advocates available for in-person response also

  • Respond in person when requested, for example at hospitals, at law enforcement's request, or at emergency shelters and other safe locations.
  • Travel within Bedford County on short notice, with mileage reimbursed at the current IRS standard rate.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to complete the required 80-hour advocate training, 10-hour practicum, and certification.
  • Calm, steady judgment in crisis and high-stress situations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a trauma-informed, survivor-centered approach.
  • Strong boundaries, ethical decision-making, and a commitment to cultural competency and equity.
  • Ability to work independently, with a supervisor available by phone.
  • Reliable phone access during shifts, and the ability to work overnight or extended shifts.
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History Check, and FBI fingerprint clearance, obtained upon hire. YSH reimburses clearance costs.
  • For in-person response: a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in victim services, social services, healthcare, or a related field, especially domestic violence or sexual assault advocacy.
  • Experience working with law enforcement, hospitals, or courts.
  • Ability to respond in person when requested.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities.

SCHEDULE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

On-call shifts mainly cover evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays. We prefer that advocates cover one week and one weekend of on-call shifts per month, but we will work with you to find a schedule that fits. Most on-call time is spent at home with your phone close by; training and team meetings are on-site. Advocates who respond in person may work in hospitals, police stations, and other high-stress settings, and they need to be ready to travel locally on short notice.
