Member Resource Center Director

SEIU Local 1021 was founded in 2007 when 10 local unions came together in northern California to form one larger, more powerful union. Areas of Responsibility: 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILLS

The MRC Director’s primary responsibility is to contribute to building a stronger union by managing the day-to-day operations of the Member Resource Center. The MRC Director’s duties listed below are representative of the position:

  • Ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Member Resource Center and coordinate the activities of the MRC with the overall programs of the Union
  • Interpreting contract language, investigating and processing workplace issues, and bargaining legal contracts.  Advises members on their rights and conditions over the phone, in person, or in writing.
  • Leads, motivates, develops, and evaluates MRC staff   
  • Plans, organizes, prioritizes, and gives overall policy guidance and review to the continuing work and special projects of the MRC
  • Oversees the creation, testing, improvement, and bringing to scale the Union’s MRC Digital Learning and Business Intelligence platforms. Uses metrics, internal feedback, and best practices to monitor the operation and effectiveness of the programs and all MRC technology platforms
  • Leads, coordinates, and obtains feedback across diverse stakeholders in the Union to deliver a high-impact MRC program
  • Identifies opportunities to modernize the MRC to enhance the member’s experience and increase member adoption. Ensures high-quality member service, consistency and set a standard of excellence and rigor
  • Develops and oversees the MRC budget. 
  • Builds, modernizes and sustains a high-impact, adaptable, and scalable MRC based on highly efficient and cost-effective systems
  • Provides reports and analysis on the work of the MRC to union stakeholders
  • Integrates and brings to scale tested and new communication tools to elevate the MRC’s outreach efforts  
  • Works closely with the Union’s Member Engagement/Staff Development Director on the Member Internship Program, which is designed to develop and increase member leadership
  • Maintains the highest level of integrity, judgment, confidentiality, and discretion in leading and in managing information and resources
  • Analyzes complex technical and operational service issues, evaluating alternative solutions, and adopting effective courses of action
  • Successful planning, adapting, coordinating, and delivering high-impact results for a variety of large and complex MRC projects, services, and programs  
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with members and union leaders  
  • Sound organizational skills to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment
  • Formulates and implements goals, objectives, plans, work standards, policies, procedures, and systems
  • Represents the Union in meetings by preparing clear, concise, and competent reports, correspondence, and other written material
  • Demonstrate understanding of the organizing model and how it can be used to empower members and ensure superior outcomes in the workplace
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of union experience
  • 3+ years of leadership experience, including supervisory experience
  • 1 year of Labor relations experience, including interpreting contracts, investigating and processing grievances, and preparing contract proposals
  • Experience planning, organizing, administering, and coordinating programs and projects
  • Proficiency with learning new technology and the ability to train others to use new technology platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build teamwork across all areas of an organization
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate for providing a quality member experience, including the ability to interact professionally with culturally and linguistically diverse staff
  • Commitment to racial, gender, economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside organizations

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working in a Union’s Member Resource Center or equivalent
  • 3+ years of Labor Relations experience
  • Strong record piloting and implementing new innovative projects, campaigns, and programs

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to work irregular and long hours, including weekends and holidays, to attend required evening and weekend events/meetings
  • Extensive travel may be required, primarily within Northern California.
Compensation/Benefits: 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary starts at $134,503.12 to $154,678.60 and is based on qualifications and experience. SEIU Local 1021 offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package. Including fully employer-paid family health coverage (including domestic partners), life insurance, a defined-benefit pension plan, 401(k) plan, and generous paid leave time.
