Salary:                 Estimated at $58,000*; Based on experience

Term of Position: March 16, 2026 – March 15, 2027

This is a limited-term position supported by external funding commitments. Funding will be formally reviewed at six (6) months to assess sustainability and continuation. While ABC intends to pursue ongoing funding and envisions this role as potentially long-term, continued employment beyond the stated term is contingent upon the availability of grant funding and partner support.

The position may include collaboration with the Development team to support fundraising and long-term sustainability efforts.

Position Summary:

 

This is a limited term position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). American Bird Conservancy is a fast-growing, results-focused nonprofit seeking employees with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to make a difference for birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. Inspired by the wonder of birds, ABC achieves lasting results for the bird species most in need while also benefiting human communities, biodiversity, and the planet’s fragile climate.

The Texas Coastal Program Coordinator position is focused on advancing bird conservation efforts along the Texas Gulf Coast, with a special emphasis on reducing trash accumulation and mitigating threats to coastal birds and habitats. The Texas Coastal Program Coordinator will support the Stopping Plastic Litter Along Shorelines (SPLASh) program, a partner program originally founded by ABC, Gulf Coast Bird Observatory (GCBO) and Black Cat GIS that engages businesses, natural resource managers, local communities, and Region 4 schools in best trash mitigation strategies and solutions. Coastal bird conservation and impacts from trash and plastic (and other threats) will be the primary focus. The position will be housed under the Gulf Coast team led by the Gulf Coastal Program Director.

 

The Program Coordinator will oversee the daily planning, coordination, and promotion of SPLASh events including clean-up events, educational programming, and community outreach sometimes in collaboration with community stakeholders and partners. This role includes supporting volunteer recruitment, managing outreach communications, and maintaining volunteer databases as well as implementing educational programming for the public, school groups, and partners.

 

This position will work from a home office. Travel will be necessary throughout the upper Texas coast using a reliable personal vehicle and a Gulf Coastal Program four-wheel-drive truck. Travel includes to clean up, outreach, and education events, partner meetings and initiatives, and occasional trips to ABC headquarters and/or locations selected for ABC staff retreats.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Primary Duties:

 

  1. Plan, organize, and participate in clean-up and outreach events across the Houston-Galveston region, including major community initiatives like NestFest, Spook-a-Clean, Earth Day, and World Oceans Day, while coordinating responsibilities and schedules with the SPLASh Team.
  2. Collaborate with the SPLASh team and environmental education partners to organize and deliver SPLASh’s Education Program for K–12 students with place-based learning experiences including classroom lessons, virtual presentations, field trips, and summer camps.
  3. Represent SPLASh at outreach and educational events, presentations, and community meetings to raise awareness of the program’s mission, promote volunteer engagement, and share bird conservation and trash mitigation strategies. Support or coordinate event logistics when needed.
  4. Manage volunteer engagement, including training and supporting volunteers in data collection protocols, providing outreach and public education guidance, coordinating volunteers for public and outreach events, and coordinating volunteer appreciation efforts.
  5. Report directly to the Texas Coastal Program Manager through regular check-ins and actively participate in SPLASh team meetings, monthly Gulf Coast meetings, and other relevant ABC meetings.
  6. In collaboration with the Program Manager, participate in partner meetings such as bi-monthly environmental education meetings and attend regional and national conferences to build partnerships, exchange ideas, and gather insights that enhance SPLASh program effectiveness.
  7. Collect and enter clean-up data in accordance with established protocols into the Texas Litter database and support updates to data visualization tools in collaboration with the SPLASh team.
  8. Maintain SPLASh Trash Database and volunteer “People Database,” ensuring accurate tracking and reporting and work with GIS specialist to maintain and improve the SPLASh StoryMap.
  9. Distribute online surveys to program participants and partners to assess program effectiveness, and work closely with ABC’s Gulf Coastal Program Director, Texas Coastal Program Manager, and GCBO to track funding deliverables and report outcomes.
  10. In collaboration with the Texas Coastal Program Manager, forward marketing and communication efforts and implement targeted strategies across social media, websites, and community platforms.
  11. Maintain program inventory, including trash clean-up gear, giveaways, outreach materials, and educational resources, ensuring all items are well-organized, clean, and properly stored.
  12. Maintain SPLASh’s email, providing prompt and professional responses to daily requests and directing inquiries and communications to appropriate staff.
  13. Track monthly expenses including mileage, subscriptions, purchases, and more.
  14. This position requires regular weekend work and occasional extended hours, based on programmatic needs.
Skills/Experience: 

Position Requirements:

 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Marine Science, Education, Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Sciences, Political Science, Social Sciences, or a related discipline.
  2. Must be highly skilled in communicating and working with external partners and audiences including recreational beach users, anglers, volunteers, community members, students and children, local, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and staff of multiple partner organizations.
  3. Excellent time management and ability to work independently, taking initiative with minimal supervision.
  4. Working knowledge of outreach and interpretation related to bird/wildlife conservation, trash and plastics management, sustainable activities, and environmental education.
  5. Strong verbal and written communication skills required – this position will require frequent public speaking.
  6. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and graphic design tools such as Canva.
  7. Intermediate to fluent Spanish is highly desirable
  8. Proven report writing skills
  9. Must have valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle for travel between work sites (mileage reimbursed)All remote and hybrid employees are required to have a stable and high-speed internet service provider in place prior to beginning work for ABC. Our distributed work force relies heavily on cloud technologies, Zoom, and other automations to successfully complete our day to day work. The ideal speeds are 30-40 Mbps for downloads and 10-15 Mbps for uploads.
