Reading Assist Intervention Corps

The Reading Corps is an AmeriCorps opportunity offered through Reading Assist in Wilmington, Delaware. Reading Assist is a nonprofit organization dedicated to children with significant reading challenges, teaching them the foundational skills of reading and empowering them to succeed academically.

 

Reading Corps members receive extensive training in the Reading Assist Intervention Program and are then placed in local schools to work with struggling readers.  This intervention is accredited by IMSLEC (International Multisensory Language Education Council) and Reading Corps members will have the opportunity to become Certified Reading Assist Interventionists through this year of service. The Reading Corps members will also serve in the greater community through group and individual service projects, some taking place on weekends.

 

We seek passionate, capable individuals who are ready to learn how to deliver this evidence based intervention program to struggling readers.  The 2018-19 position runs from

Benefits: Reading Corps members receive a living allowance of $18,000, health benefits (if needed), the opportunity to defer student loans with most loan providers and childcare (if eligible).  Upon successful completion of the program, members will receive an education grant of $5,000 - $6000 which can be used towards qualified future educational expenses or to repay student loans. Members who are 55 years of age or more when they begin service may gift the education award to a child or grandchild.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree
Skills/Experience: 

Ability to blend, segment, and manipulate sounds within words

Knowledge of basic word processing, email and internet skills

Willingness to work with children who may have behavioral challenges in addition to academic needs

Patience and flexibility

Good communication skills

Ability to stay organized

Ability to work with others

Open to new learning

Compensation/Benefits: 

This is an AmeriCorps position.  AmeriCorps members give a year of service and receive an $18,000 living allowance and an education award of approximately $5500 upon successful completion of the required 1700 hours of service.  The opportunity to defer student loans, receive health benefits and childcare is also available to those who are eligible.
