PL+US: Paid Leave for the US is hiring a Legislative Director to join our fast-moving team fighting to win paid family leave for everyone in the United States.

About this opportunity

We are looking for a smart and savvy Legislative Director to represent PL+US on Capitol Hill and help coordinate multiple, fast-paced campaigns that localize paid family for key Members of Congress. Working in close collaboration with our team and external stakeholders, you will ensure PL+US is strategically leveraging our core strengths to support the passage of high quality federal paid leave policy. 

You are an ideal candidate for this role if you have experience working on Capitol Hill and/or at a DC-based advocacy organization and are ready to apply everything you’ve learned over the years to win one of the signature battles of the decade.

Areas of Responsibility: 

About the role:

In this role, you’ll lead PL+US’ work with Members of Congress to pass high quality paid family and medical leave.

Duties will include:

  • Build relationships with members of Congress and their staff to develop them into paid leave champions;

  • Lobby Congressional offices and Federal agencies on behalf of PL+US;

  • Track federal paid family leave legislation and meet with key committees and congressional staff;

  • Advise the PL+US Campaigns Team on target selection and content for multiple campaigns across the country;

  • Develop clear and proactive project plans and provide timely reports to ensure goals are being met; 

  • Collaborate with national and state organizations to achieve clear and target specific goals; 

  • Represent PL+US in coalition meetings;

  • Provide effective and fast-paced support to campaign staff and consultants including but not limited to development of target specific fact sheets and rapid response materials that engage legislators, our members, and the public; and,

  • Identify and generate ways for PL+US supporters to take actions that help us win national paid family leave legislation.

Reports to: VP of Legislative & Political Strategy

Location: This is a full time remote position. You must be based in the Washington DC metro area.

Skills/Experience: 

To be successful in the role, you’ll need: 

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of legislative experience in a congressional office or DC-based advocacy organization;

  • A strategic thinker that is an excellent writer and inspiring communicator;

  • A confident advocate that is willing to makes direct requests to elected officials and staff;

  • An excellent project manager with experience working in a coalition;

  • A self-starter that can handle multiple projects in a fast-moving environment;

  • Ability to quickly digest, analyze, and translate complicated legislation into actionable campaign communications; 

  • A deep commitment to equity and inclusion, and experience working in diverse teams; and,

  • Passion for winning paid family leave for everyone in the US. 
     

Pluses: 

A strong candidate will likely be an unabashed policy wonk who loves the field, with:

  • A deep network of political and legislative contacts; and,

  • Experience on health, tax, labor, or childcare policy. 

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $85,000-100,000 depending on experience and qualifications
