Salary: Approx. $85k depending on experience

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) — a fast-growing nonprofit founded in 1994 — is looking for an editor with the skills to take our Member magazine, Bird Conservation, and other print/written materials to the next level.
Required skills include: the ability to transform technical jargon into compelling prose; visualize great design and graphics that elevate written content; aptitude with both print and digital platforms; and the flexibility to pivot on priorities when new opportunities arise. The position will share responsibility with our current Writer/Editor for maintaining quality and consistency across ABC’s marketing and communications materials.
ABC’s culture is fast-paced and collaborative, with a growing staff of 125+ staff working together to reverse the drastic declines of bird populations across the Americas. Major Duties:
- Lead comprehensive redesign of ABC’s Bird Conservation magazine
- Manage Bird Conservation magazine (3 issues per year), leading creative direction; writing and/or editing content; and conceptualizing complementary multimedia.
- Manage freelance writers and consultants, when applicable, in coordination with Director of Communications
- Write and edit content for the ABC Annual Report and other institutional publications.
- Edit and proofread ABC print and digital publications and communications for style, grammar, and syntax as needed.
- Play an editorial role as needed in ABC’s digital content, including the news and blog sections of the website.
- Contribute to the further development of and adherence to ABC’s organization-wide content strategy and style guides.
- Work closely and collaborate with other writers on staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, ornithology, or biological sciences; or a combination of relevant education and experience
- At least 8 years of experience in magazine publishing, design, and/or feature writing, as well as solid management experience
- Knowledge of birds and conservation principles, as well as a personal commitment to ABC’s bird conservation mission
- Collaborative workstyle, sense of humor, and capacity to work as part of a team as well as independently
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Proven experience using established editorial style guides such as AP
- Willingness to travel on occasion
- Experience working in a multi-location or international organization
- Familiarity with nonprofit settings, preferably in biodiversity conservation
- Ability to conceptualize data and other content visually and to work closely with designers to achieve top-quality graphics
- Knowledge of best practices for SEO
- Ability to speak and write Spanish and/or Portuguese a plus
- Background screening required
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; U.S. citizen or permanent resident
