The American Flood Coalition is a nonpartisan group of more than 315 elected officials, local leaders, military groups, and businesses that have come together to advocate for national solutions to sea level rise and flooding. The Coalition advances resilient and equitable solutions that support adaptation and recovery in flood-affected communities and protect our nation’s residents, economy, and military installations. With its singular focus on flooding and sea level rise, creative approach to finding solutions, and appreciation for deep community partnerships that leverage existing efforts, the Coalition seeks to significantly improve how communities around the country adapt to flooding and sea level rise.


Position Summary
We are seeking a strategic, innovative, and relationship-oriented Coalition Engagement Director to join our growing Outreach Team, which is responsible for recruiting, engaging, and supporting our Coalition members as they drive adaptation to flooding nationally and in their own regions, states, and communities. The Coalition Engagement Director will provide inspiring leadership and will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic initiatives and systems (e.g. impact measurement structures, special events,) that drive results in member engagement and recruitment, both of which are critical to the Coalition’s success. The ideal candidate will be a driven, team-oriented leader who has outstanding interpersonal skills and can analyze complex data, learn quickly, synthesize and communicate ideas clearly, and share knowledge effectively. The Coalition Engagement Director will supervise at least one team member, report to our Senior Outreach Director, and collaborate closely with our State Programs Director and our field-based State Directors in Florida, North and South Carolina, and Texas. This is a full-time position located in our headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Responsibilities
Strategic Engagement & Impact Measurement

  • Champion, develop, and implement strategic member engagement initiatives to align with AFC’s 2030 goals, values, and mission.

  • Establish impact metrics and oversee the collection, organization, and analysis of data to better understand AFC members and improve future engagement.

  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative internal tools and systems to multiply the impact of our member recruitment, onboarding, and engagement.

  • Develop systems for annually surveying members, recognizing member accomplishments, reporting on key member metrics, and driving actionable steps to respond to member needs.

  • Build relationships with and develop engagement and recruitment strategies for members in key regions where AFC does not currently have locally based staff.
     

Programming & Special Event Leadership

  • Direct and lead cross-functional project teams to implement complex member-facing events.

  • Design programming and lead project teams to develop content that meets diverse member needs, such as expert talks, case studies, local tours, or training sessions.

  • Oversee relevant contracts, consultants, and grants that relate to member engagement.
     

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leading Others

  • Build strong relationships with all staff, especially AFC’s State Directors who interface daily with Coalition members, to ensure a collaborative and grounded approach.

  • Synthesize strategic insights and storytelling drawn from member engagement data and knowledge to inform the organization’s communications, policy, strategy, and operations.

  • Coach, guide, and train team members across the organization on member engagement best practices and ensure that all staff have an opportunity to build local relationships.

  • Provide strong leadership, management, and oversight of at least one direct report.

Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications

  • ​​8+ years of relevant experience in coalition building and/or membership services; experience engaging directly with local or state elected leaders is preferred but not required.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including presentation skills, with a proven ability to understand political aspects related to the subject matter and audience and to effectively frame and communicate messages accordingly.

  • Exceptional skill communicating about complex issues in a clear, credible, and compelling manner, with a tailored approach to an audience.

  • Ability to be a self-starter, conceptualizing, designing, and executing initiatives from start to finish.

  • Strong track record leading and managing diverse and geographically distributed project teams to successfully conceptualize and execute multiple projects simultaneously; personnel management experience strongly preferred.

  • Proven ability to systematically build and scale programs, tools, or systems.

  • Experience interacting remotely; a passion for regularly traveling to engage with membership and teammates is strongly preferred.

  • Experience utilizing tools including, but not limited to Copper CRM, Mailchimp, Google Sheets, and Asana or similar tools is strongly preferred

Compensation/Benefits:

  • Highly competitive compensation ($95,000-$115,000)
