The National WIC Association (NWA), located in Washington, DC, seeks a full-time Accountant to join its diverse team of seventeen dedicated professionals. NWA is a high-impact non-profit, member organization that represents more than 2,000 service provider agencies that offer quality nutrition education, breastfeeding support, health care and other social referral services to at-risk women and young children in over 10,000 WIC clinics nationwide.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Accountant ensures efficient transactional processing through NWA’s accounting system, and sound financial record-keeping. The Accountant is responsible for Accounts Payable, Closings, Reporting, and related Records Management. The incumbent works closely with the Operations Manager to ensure overall bookkeeping and accounting processes are coordinated effectively.

 

Accounts Payable

 

  • Process payables via Bill.com, ensuring proper vendor setup, accurate and appropriate coding of funding sources, functional/departmental classes, account classifications, and descriptions.
  • Issue 1099s.
  • Provide training and feedback to staff to reinforce spending policies and procedures, improve control, and enhance efficiency.

 

Closings

 

  • Deliver accurate and timely month end trial balance via supported reconciliations of bank and investment accounts, all other balance sheet, and selected P&L accounts.
  • Record membership and event revenues and receipts captured in web-based customer interface systems; reconcile and record receipts via Stripe.
  • Record and release deferred revenues and prepaid expenses.
  • Monitor remote bank deposits and post related journal entries.
  • Maintain journal entry support for efficient analysis, audit prep, and response to queries.
  • Download detail of bank and credit card activity to monitor, control, and record transactions.
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules.
  • Post payroll entries including those to track benefit and payroll tax liabilities and expenses.
  • Develop and post allocations to proper funding source and functional cost codes for salaries and indirect costs.

 

Reporting

 

  • Assist Director of Finance in preparation of financial statements, management reports, grant spend status, and other routine or ad hoc report requests from Board, management, and staff.
  • Support NWA’s budget process through spreadsheet development, analysis of recent transactional history, and interface with department heads.
  • Assist Development team in preparation of grant budgets and periodic reporting to grantors against committed budgets.
  • Track and report revenues and expenses for membership, product sales, conferences and events and single-purpose funds set up by Board or management.

 

Records Management

 

  • Keep all accounting-related files current and well-organized. Maintain physical or electronic control over records to ensure compliance with policy and preserve confidentiality.
  • Fulfill accounting-based requests during annual audit; anticipate audit needs throughout the year based on prior “prepared by client” documents and new transactions.

 

General

 

  • Apply existing skills and further develop proficiency in QuickBooks Desktop and Online,
  • Apply intermediate to advanced Excel skills through existing proficiency and ongoing personal development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

 

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
  • Experience using QuickBooks Online and Desktop including bank links and Bill.com interface.
  • Understanding of the accounting cycle; GAAP knowledge beneficial.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel ability.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary

$70,000 – $90,000
