Executive Director

Sufi Center East, a small 501c3 spiritual education nonprofit, seeks an experienced nonprofit Executive Director (ED) who can balance strategic planning with daily operational oversight, work with diverse groups and create an environment of collaboration and respect while growing our organization and programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 

As the Executive Director, you will oversee all aspects of our organization’s operations. Your responsibilities will include:

Leadership & Strategic Vision:

  • Collaborate with the Board to define and implement the short- and long-term vision of the organization.
  • Lead strategic planning efforts and ensure progress toward organizational goals.
  • Provide vision and direction for the development of programs that align with our mission.
  • Help recruit new board members when needed.

Administration & Facilities Management:

  • Oversee daily operations of the organization, including office management and upkeep of land and facilities.
  • Manage renovation projects and establishment of an Islamic cemetery.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, as well as internal policies and bylaws.

Programs & Marketing:

  • Work with staff and volunteers to offer a diverse array of spiritual programs, workshops, and retreats.
  • Oversee event planning and scheduling and organizational calendar; find  outside group retreats to fill gaps in the schedule.
  • Ensure all programs are effectively promoted to our community and the public.

Staff & Volunteer Management:

  • Lead recruitment, training, supervision and performance evaluations for staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are followed and reviewed/ updated.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive work environment that encourages competency, kindness and professional growth in alignment with the organization’s values.

Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage annual budgets with the Board.
  • Ensure the accounting firm has all financial information needed for regular financial reports.
  • Work with the board to ensure adequate operating resources and promote financial stability.
  • Lead fundraising campaigns and identify grant opportunities to support the organization’s work.
     
Educational Background: 
College degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a nonprofit Executive Director (or in a senior role at a large nonprofit); or demonstrate enough transferable skills from a for-profit career.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the requirements to maintain nonprofit status.
  • Proven track record of managing teams, including hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Solid experience in project management and event planning.
  • Alignment with our core spiritual values, even if you are not a Muslim.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Financial management expertise, including budgeting and fundraising.
  • Commitment to fostering a functional,  respectful, inclusive, and ethical work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practicing Sufi or Muslim.
  • Experience working in religious or spiritual nonprofit.
  • Knowledge of retreat center operations /hospitality.
  • Ability to manage complex projects such as building renovations; negotiate and work with contractors.
  • Able to be hands-on with practical tasks when needed.
  • Grant writing experience and fundraising success.
  • Experience serving a multi-generational, multicultural audience.
  • Knowledge or interest in sustainable / regenerative farming.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary commensurate with experience ($50K minimum)

Currently an all volunteer organization, we do not have a set benefits package.
