As the Vice President of People Resources and Rewards, you will manage critical human resources support functions for Teach For America’s 3,000+ full-time, part-time, and contract employees. These functions include benefits administration, compensation administration, employee policy compliance, federal and state labor regulation compliance, employee entering and exiting processes, and workplace safety. You will virtually manage two direct reports - the (1) Sr. Managing Director, Benefits & Compensation Partner and the (2) Sr. Managing Director, Generalists - and an overall team of 18 full-time employees comprised of HR Generalists and subject-matter experts in Compensation and Benefits who interface daily with Teach For America employees across 47 different states and Washington, D.C.. You will report to the Chief People Officer and be a member of her Human Assets Management Team (HAMT), whose members are collectively responsible for delivering on the HA team vision that Teach For America is the highest-impact nonprofit in the world and the greatest place to work in our country.

The ideal candidate is motivated by managing people and systems to optimize outcomes, efficiency, and compliance with a deeply human-centered customer service experience. Additionally, they must demonstrate a high degree of integrity when dealing with sensitive personnel matters and must exemplify personal responsibility for results, continuous learning, and persistence in the face of challenge.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The VP, People Resources and Rewards is responsible for:

Managing, Aligning, and Integrating Work Across the Team and Organization  

Manage core human resources support functions (benefits administration, compensation administration, employee policy compliance, federal and state labor regulation compliance, employee entering and exiting processes, and workplace safety), across two sub-teams (Benefits & Compensation and HR Generalists), and guide vision- and goal-setting, identifying key change initiatives, strategic planning, and performance management.  Align and integrate the work of the full team to support TFA’s Foundations, Multicultural Competencies, talent strategy, and culture, as well as to ensure efficiency and compliance across the organization.  This is done with respect to the core team functional areas:

  • Compensation including design and administration of the salary structure, salary offers, and annual compensation review
  • Benefits which includes design and execution of our benefits programs (medical, retirement, and other benefits)
  • HA Generalists who provide front-line support and customer service to all staff members for general HA needs
  • Employee Compliance Strategy who oversee our employment policies and ensure ongoing communication and compliance with applicable state and federal labor laws

Providing Cultural Leadership for People Resources and Rewards Team    

In collaboration with the team, establish and maintain structures to provide for a strong and positive team culture, including planning and executing on:

  • Regular team meetings and step-backs
  • Mechanisms for cross-team collaboration and sharing
  • Other structures to support the professional and personal growth of all people across the team

Participate in HA-wide Planning and Alignment       

As a member of the Human Assets Management Team, the VP, People Resources and Rewards will also play a key role in collaborating with colleagues on the Human Assets team and across the organization to develop and support the Human Asset team’s top-level priorities and strategies

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience in human resources and team management
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute large scale processes or initiatives to deliver an exceptional customer/end user experience while reaching organizational objectives
  • Experience presenting to and partnering with senior leadership
  • Demonstrated success in handling or advising on challenging staff experience and/or policy situations
  • Prior experience successfully managing a team and developing leaders
  • Comfort with rigorous quantitative analysis and data measurement
  • Strong people management skills with a warm approach to developing team members
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential matters with complete discretion
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills (both written and verbal) including the ability to adapt to different audiences
  • Ability to partner with and influence others across Human Assets and other teams at Teach For America
  • Fluency in HRIS systems (especially Workday) desirable
  • Commitment to learning and continuously growing with the team, including staying current with HR trends, best practices, and regulatory updates to inform policy decisions
  • Sense of humor, optimism, and a joyful presence
  • Human Resources Certification (S/PRH and/or SHRM-S/CP) and/or HR-focused Master’s Degree highly preferred

 Work Demands:

  • Travel at least six times per year to team conferences, management team meetings, and other required site visits
