The Outreach Biologist will communicate about the Migratory Bird Initiative on behalf of Audubon, working with data and knowledge holders to build relationships and acquire migratory bird datasets. S/he will:
- Act as a liaison on behalf of Audubon in the area of migratory bird science.
- Discover and acquire tracking and occurrence datasets for North American migratory birds throughout the Western Hemisphere.
- Collaborate with data providers to link to and spotlight their research.
- Work with species experts to review products from their data or for their study species.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Working as a team with other staff to prioritize data needs and approaches.
- Identifying tracking and occurrence datasets through online research and interviewing knowledge-holders.
- Contacting a large and diverse set of international migratory bird scientists and institutions to build relationships to access data.
- Collaborate with data-holders to secure access to spatial data for inclusion in Audubon’s migratory bird data platform and atlas.
- Manage data-sharing agreements.
- Acquire and deliver spatial datasets to the atlas team.
- Gather other types of avian information to include in Audubon digital products.
- Write summaries, species accounts, reports, and other communication pieces for outreach around the topic of migratory birds.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree or higher plus 1-3 years of experience in biology, ecology, geography, spatial ecology or environment/conservation-related field.
Skills/Experience:
- GIS skills sufficient for navigating online databases, accessing and querying spatial databases, and conversing about spatial products with data holders and the migratory bird team.
- Demonstrated ability handling large datasets, metadata, and support documentation.
- Understanding of animal capture and marking (e.g., banding), tracking technology, and/or passive monitoring (e.g., acoustics, radar ecology).
- Must be able to speak coherently on bird populations and conservation.
- Interest in outreach.
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a group.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Spanish language proficiency preferred. Ability to converse in Portuguese / French, a plus.
Preferred:
- Experience banding, tagging, tracking and/or passively monitoring migratory birds,
- Expertise in ornithology, especially birds of North America,
- Interest in migratory bird conservation.
