We’re looking for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to join our leadership team.

We use online marketing, PR, and social media to engage the masses and raise money + raise hell for causes we believe in. We have served nonprofits for 30 years, leading campaigns on some of the most pressing issues of our time -- the Fight for $15 and a Union, marriage equality, family separation, Save Darfur, refugee protection, the Clean Air Act, Keystone XL, criminal justice reform, COVID economic relief, voter suppression, and defending democracy against the Big Lie.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • M+R’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will effectively manage a complex and multifaceted organization while leading the development and implementation of the firm’s business and financial strategy and will have all the accountabilities and authorities usually associated with a chief executive officer.  

  • The CEO will inherit a proud tradition of helping causes that inspire people to act -- alleviating suffering, fighting for human rights and democracy, dismantling inequality, making art and knowledge accessible to everyone, and fostering a healthier and sustainable world.

  • The CEO will be responsible for making top-level managerial decisions; communicating and implementing the firm's vision, mission, and direction; and ensuring the overall success of the firm. The CEO will provide the necessary management, strategic direction, and articulation of vision and goals for the firm.  

  • The CEO will be someone with an in-depth understanding of a progressive organizational culture that incorporates inclusive decision making, has experience managing in a consulting firm, and will play a pivotal role in M+R’s client work.

 

Here’s what you’ll be doing in this role:

 

  • Define and articulate M+R’s strategic vision, goals, and objectives and ensure it is effectively implemented by other leaders.

  • Direct and oversee firmwide business development and marketing efforts to drive growth and achievement of revenue goals. 

  • Work with firm leaders to intentionally drive the direction of the firm's services to meet market demand and opportunities. 

  • In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the CEO will oversee the annual budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and profitability.

  • Monitor financial performance, identify areas for improvement, and work with other leaders to implement corrective actions.

  • Foster an internal culture that embraces innovative thinking, enhancing M+R’s commitment to unleashing the power of people to do good.

  • Promote a culture that values agile problem solving, inclusive decision making, informed risk taking, and learning from mistakes both in the way we work internally and externally in client-facing work. 

  • Manage firmwide internal communications to foster effective collaboration and information sharing.

  • Support AEI among M+R staff, ensuring that AEI is an integral part of M+R’s strategy and the way it works, internally and externally.

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to senior executives, promoting their professional development and growth.

  • Cultivate a high-performing executive team and supervise Chief Financial Officer, Chief People Officer, SVP of Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion (AEI), and VP of Special Projects.

Skills/Experience: 

Competencies and expertise for this role:

 

  • Strategy and Vision -- Brings systemic, big-picture thinking and visioning to day-to-day work. Demonstrated ability to drive organizational progress, balance multiple priorities, and lead through change. 

  • Management and Operations -- Senior-level experience overseeing the financial and management systems required to support a thriving operation. The ability to advise, motivate, and lead a diverse staff of highly accomplished people to whom much responsibility and authority are delegated.

  • Stakeholder Engagement -- Highly developed communication and relationship-building skills. Experience collaborating with a board of directors and other stakeholders to advance the mission. 

  • Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion -- A demonstrated commitment to using an equity lens in strategies that catalyze gains for marginalized communities; a dedication to sustaining and enriching staff diversity and ensuring AEI in the workforce.

  • Energetic Ambassador -- Empathic, approachable, and energetic ambassador who can inspire internal and external constituents and catalyze action.

  • Keen Business Sense -- Big picture thinker; firm commitment to fiscal responsibility; Ability to keep the firm on a profitable growth trajectory.

  • Innovative and Entrepreneurial -- Able to identify trends and take risks as appropriate, with an understanding of the essentials of risk management; and able to maintain balance and perspective.  

  • Communicator -- A good listener and strategist; comfortable receiving input from many sources; and able to analyze and formulate disparate information into sound, well-organized plans.

 

Skills and experiences required for this role:

 

  • Proven experience as CEO or in other C-Suite position.

  • 7+ years of experience in developing, planning, and implementing profitable strategies in a professional services firm.

  • Understanding of the nonprofit communications and marketing industry.

  • Strong business acumen with the ability to drive strategic growth.

  • In-depth knowledge of corporate governance, finance, and performance management.

  • Familiarity with various business functions such as marketing, business development, finance, and human resources.

  • Outstanding organizational and leadership skills.

  • Keen analytical abilities and problem-solving skills.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary and benefits:

 

This is an exempt status position. The salary for this position is $265,000 plus an incentive-based bonus program. 

 

We also offer a generous benefits package:
 

  • Three weeks vacation, three personal days, and 15 paid sick days;
