Advance Native Political Leadership Action Fund is looking for a National Program Associate to join our growing team. The National Program Associate will underpin Advance’s expansive research program – touching every program area in the organization. With sharp research skills, strong communication, extreme ownership over details, and a penchant for juggling multiple small, but significant projects at once, this role will be instrumental in supporting a consistent and quality program. 

The person in this role will develop systems to gather and present comprehensive research on a range of issues: tracking candidate, elected official, political appointees, judges, political talent, as well as legislation and other areas as assigned. This will include maintaining a detailed database in each area with consistent and regular updates, developing quick familiarity with navigating government websites and relevant news sources, and finding opportunities to increase the efficiency and accuracy with which the research is gathered. 

Although the core of this role will live in its comprehensive research and data collection function, it will include significant administrative, coordination, and outreach functions as assigned. If you consider yourself expert at navigating the internet and social media for research purposes, have a minor obsession with well-designed and functional spreadsheets, and have a passion for research – you found your home.

Areas of Responsibility: 

These responsibilities are an estimation of the role. The role may change based on applicant skill sets, interests, and evolving needs of the organization.

  • Program Research (50%)

    • Develop a systematic process for researching, updating, and reporting on assigned databases on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis;

    • Conduct a comprehensive sweep of county election websites, local news sources, social media, and other sources when discovered to build the most comprehensive list of Native candidates running for office in the country;

    • Conduct a comprehensive review of county election websites, local news sources, social media, and other sources when discovered to build the most comprehensive list of Native elected officials in the country;

    • Conduct comprehensive research of necessary internet resources and partners to identify Native judges, political appointees, and political talent;

    • During active election seasons, regularly update candidate tracker with election updates, news, fundraising reports, and final results in service of our twice annual national election report;

    • In coordination with National Program Director, develop a legislative tracking system for issues impacting Native communities in key federal and state jurisdictions – track introduction, committee movements, sponsors, text changes, final votes, and other items as assigned;

    • Under the direction of the National Program Director, prepare candidate briefs with detailed district analysis, fundraising, and candidate backgrounds (we will train you) in service of our annual endorsement process;

    • Service the development of other special reports, new initiatives, and projects as assigned.

  • Communications & Outreach (30%)

    • Support alumni communication, providing regular updates, drafting emails, and communication through other mediums as assigned;

    • Support strategic partnership and recruitment through the creation of contact lists, conference lists, draft emails, and mass outreach where necessary;

    • Support the creation of regular candidate and elected updates, drafting emails utilizing candidate and elected databases, where necessary;

    • Lead email communication, regular updates, and schedule coordination for Build Native Power Coalition and National Native Justice Organizations.

  • General Administrative Support (20%)

    • Under the direction of the Training Manager, coordinate travel, accommodations, and logistics for NLI trainings and events;

    • Provide through note taking and action items during partner meetings and program team meetings;

    • When necessary, assisting in developing and maintaining an organizational system for record keeping in google drive and dropbox.

    • Other duties as assigned

Skills/Experience: 

To be successful in this role you should have the following experience

  • Two-year College Degree or equivalent 2+ years of experience in a related field including in an administrative support, research, or programmatic role.

  • Experience developing and maintaining organized, comprehensive, and detailed research in google sheets;

  • Attention to detail is a must – this isn’t just a line, this is critical to success in the role. 

  • Demonstrated ability to organize personal task lists, maintain through notes and action items, manage your time, self-establish deadlines and communicate resources needed effectively.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both in professional communications and communicating research findings.

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results; self-starter who thinks strategically, proactively and creatively.

  • Demonstrated willingness to be a team player with experience working in fast-paced, evolving environments that require lots of collaboration, transparency,  and an all hands on deck approach.

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and cross-department work simultaneously.

  • Experience working on political campaigns or with candidates directly or through project based work. 

  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated awareness of one’s own cultural identity, respect for differences, and the ability to learn and build on varying cultural and community norms. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture.

  • Comfort working remotely, experience collaborating with teams / staff remotely – being responsible for managing your own time and communicating effectively.

  • Experience or exposure to specific tools: wordpress, salesforce, google suite, and task management software (e.g. Monday, Asana)

Compensation/Benefits: 

This position is salaried within a range of $50,000-65,000 and comes with a generous package of comprehensive benefits. Including but not limited to:

This is a remote position and requires consistent phone and internet access at your home office location. This position may require up to 20% travel. We are not offering U.S. visa sponsorship for this role.

Additional Information: 

Interview Process

Qualified candidates will participate in a series of interviews. There will be three to four 1-hour interviews, and one 1-hour exercise over the course of six weeks.
