Communications Manager, Justice & Opportunity

Redwood City, CA, USA

The Justice & Opportunity Initiative (JOI) encompasses CZI's work across Criminal Justice Reform, Housing Affordability, and Immigration. Leveraging a suite of tools including grantmaking, movement building, and technology, we support advocacy efforts that tackle systemic barriers to opportunity that hold so many people and families back from reaching their full potential.

This role sits in the Communications & Brand team at CZI, and explicitly supports the JOI portfolio. It reports into the Communications lead for JOI.

Areas of Responsibility:

Founded by Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is a new kind of philanthropy that’s leveraging technology to help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges – from eradicating disease to improving education to reforming the criminal justice system. Across three core Initiative focus areas of Science, Education, and Justice and Opportunity,  we’re pairing engineering with grantmaking, impact investing, policy work, and movement building, to help build an inclusive, just, and healthy future for everyone.

Our Values

We believe we can help build a future for everyone.

  • We aim to be daring, but humble:  We look for bold ideas — regardless of structure and stage — and help them scale by pairing engineers with subject matter experts to build tools that accelerate the pace of social progress.
  • We want to learn fast, but build for the long-term: We want to iterate fast and help bring new solutions to the table, but we also realize that important breakthroughs often take decades or even centuries.
  • Stay close to the real problems: We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands our society’s challenges like those who live them every day.

Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other's assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, formerly incarcerated people, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or gender non-conforming, first and second-generation immigrants, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

You will

Build and execute strategic communications plans:

  • Plan for key announcements, launch moments, and storytelling opportunities across the JOI portfolio. Focus on elevating the issues and the work of partner organizations across CZI's channels and in the media.
  • Draft press releases, newsroom posts, statements, messaging guides, and other communications materials.
  • Work with CZI's external partners to execute joint communications plans.

Manage press engagements:

  • Proactively source and pitch stories around our work- and our partners' work- in JOI.
  • Be prepared to aid in any crisis communications, should needs arise.
  • Field media requests associated with the portfolio.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with members of the press, communications teams from partner organizations, and leaders in each JOI movement space.
  • Support team members- including program heads and company leadership- in preparing for media interviews and speaking engagements (includes media training).

Work collaboratively and cross-functionally:

  • Serve as comms liaison, thought partner, and advisor to the JOI program team members (grantmakers and tech leads).
  • Support cross-functional brand projects- e.g. videos, social media campaigns, website refreshes, and more.
  • Partner with the internal comms to insure that all CZI staff are up to speed on JOI news.

You have

  • A passion for social justice.
  • Strong experience working with reporters across outlet types, including both national and local press. Must have "on-the-record" experience and a proven track record of media engagement.
  • A preference for working in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Issue-area experience in housing, criminal justice reform, and/or immigration (extremely nice to have), and familiarity with the policy landscape is a plus.
