The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) leads the areas of finance and accounting, as well as supervising human resources, IT, facilities, environmental health and safety, procurement, and general administration for GMRI and its affiliate(s). The CFO facilitates strategies to ensure smooth and efficient growth in the infrastructure/systems needed to support GMRI’s strategic plan as the organization expands to 100 employees and more. The CFO is also responsible for ensuring legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial, human resource, and safety functions.
As a member of the senior management team, the CFO is an active participant in GMRI’s top-level strategic planning, policy creation, and new business initiatives. The CFO also staffs the Finance/Audit, and Investment committees of the Board of Directors and works closely with the members of those committees.
Specific responsibilities include:
Financial Leadership and Management
- Lead in developing financial infrastructure and policy strategies in coordination with the senior management team.
- Oversee budgeting, and financial forecasting for existing programs and proposed new initiatives.
- Ensure timely, accurate preparation of all internal and external financial reports, including monthly and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for GMRI’s senior management team and board members.
- Oversee monthly cash flow planning, investments, and asset management.
- Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and corporate donors.
- Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
- Develop financing strategies to meet organizational needs, maintain all bank relationships, and manage mortgage loans and all other financing needs.
- Manage the Grants and Accounting team to provide for strong financial systems which result in clean audits.
- Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
- Oversee all audit activities; tax return, 401k plan, and payroll filings; and GMRI’s Federal indirect rate negotiations.
- Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
Administrative Leadership and Management
- Facilitate development of administrative, facilities, and technology strategies as a part of the strategic planning and policy development of the senior management team.
- Partner with the Management Team to advance the organization’s financial, budgeting, and administrative processes—including HR, payroll, and benefits functions—with an eye to continuously developing and improving systems and achieving GMRI’s mission.
- Help provide IT vision and supervise IT staff to maintain GMRI’s current systems, design an IT plan for the future, and implement it successfully to meet IT needs (hardware and software) as the organization grows.
- Manage the Administration and Facilities staff in maintaining the organization’s physical infrastructure, facilities, and other systems (phone system, safety, cleaning, supplies, etc.).
- Support the Management Team’s business development efforts as they lead to establishing new subsidiaries, partnerships or other alliances.
The CFO will be a strategically oriented financial/operational executive with broad-based experience, and the willingness to work at the detail level as needed. Experience and core expertise in budget planning, control, and presentation are essential. Knowledge of grants and contracts, especially for federal support, is strongly preferred. Comfort and experience with IT and HR strategy and management is necessary. Candidates must be committed to GMRI’s mission and values, and demonstrate a strong appreciation of GMRI’s scientific research and program interests.
The CFO will be a seasoned and mature leader with at least ten years of professional experience, including managing the finance and administration of equal or larger growing organizations (strong preference given to nonprofit experience) with complex funding sources, including federal and state contracts, and one or more affiliates. The CFO will have experience creating and driving the analytic framework for planning and managing organizational change in a highly entrepreneurial organization. The CFO must also be a person who is effective operating in a collegial environment, who reaches out to colleagues and earns their confidence, support and assistance.
The CFO will have the following experience and attributes:
- Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
- A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible financial and operational management experience in a complex environment.
- MA/MBA in Business, Management, or Finance combined with CPA preferred, though equivalent experience will be considered.
- Experience in a senior financial-management role, membership of a management team, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies.
- Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated grant accounting systems, federally negotiated indirect rates, compliance, and reporting, preferably in organization(s) of 100 or more employees.
- Knowledge and understanding of the applicable Office of Management and Budget circulars and Uniform Guidance audit requirements.
- Technologically savvy, with an ability to point to examples of having worked with IT staff to develop and implement new processes and systems that increased efficiency in a fast-moving environment.
- General knowledge of HR management with experience in developing HR systems.
- Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
- Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
- Flexible and a self-starter in a fast-moving environment.
