Living Jazz is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Executive Director, who is passionate about the mission of Living Jazz, to lead the organization towards the next several decades of growth and development. Celebrating an amazing 37 years, the founding Executive Director will move into the role of Artistic Director. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Artistic Director towards an exciting future of continued program, staff, and board development. The Executive Director will protect the heart and soul of Living Jazz by maintaining our core values of community building, accessibility, equity, diversity, generosity, respect, and cultural legacy.
General Summary
The Executive Director will be responsible for managing the financial resources of Living Jazz to ensure a stable financial basis, while assisting the Artistic Director in program production and development. The Executive Director will be responsible for individual and major gifts and the development of our legacy program. They will work to enhance program revenue capacity and institutional support. The Executive Director will support the existing culture of our staff and board as an effective, positive working team. This position reports to the President of the Board of Living Jazz.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Commits and furthers Living Jazz’s mission and vision of artistic excellence, education, and community inclusion in clear and achievable terms.

Serves as the organization’s public face and spokesperson.

Brings together stakeholders– the public, musicians, teaching faculty, board, administration.

Secures, allocates and develops the financial, technical, and human resources required for the achievement of these strategies and goals.

Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day management and operations of Living Jazz, including interfacing with all key constituents related to operational, fundraising, and financial objectives.

Along with the Artistic Director, oversees program production.

Provides the board with timely, clear and accurate reports, and projections on financial, fundraising, and operational activities.

Applies new ways to solve complex situations, originating new techniques, criteria, or standards to address innovative opportunities, challenges, or initiatives.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: ED and AD Structure
Executive Director
-
Responsible for managing the financial resources of Living Jazz. This includes annual cash flow reports, budget strategies, project budgets, and accounting oversight.

Ensure administration, and human resource oversight.

Oversight and design of a development strategy with an active role in cultivation and stewardship.

Manage grant applications or work in collaboration with external grant writer(s).

Work with AD and Marketing Director to maintain oversight of all marketing, branding, and public relations.

Oversee staff and developing roles for future staff based on organizational needs.

Oversight of IT.
-
Professional development of staff and organization, with an eye on equity and inclusion.
-
Spokesperson and face of Living Jazz. The ED reflects the tone and core values of the organization.

Maintains optimal board and staff relations. Generate any information and reports for Board needs.

Understands that the spirit of collaboration/team approach among all staff and board is key to Living Jazz’s success.
Artistic Director
-
Carry out the Living Jazz mission of “transforming lives through music” by developing an annual season of programming with buy-in from ED, board, and staff.

Design and oversight of production of Living Jazz programs.
-
Contract program artists, technicians, and co-producers.
-
Coordinate personnel to manage volunteers and program work-study positions for all programs.
-
Work with ED and Marketing Director to maintain oversight of artistic event promotions: e.g. website event pages, e-promo, social, public relations, audience development and engagement.

Enhance visibility of ED and work to strengthen relationships of ED to donors, and all Living Jazz constituents.
-
Representation of Living Jazz artistic vision to artists and music professionals, supporters, donors, funders, partners, and other constituencies as appropriate.

Maintain optimal board and staff relations.

Attends all board meetings.

Understands that the spirit of collaboration/team approach among all staff and board is key to Living Jazz’s success.
DESIRED CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES:

Must live in the San Francisco Bay Area and be able to work at our Oakland office.

Minimum of 4-7 years of professional experience in nonprofit arts leadership or business of similar scale with a particular expertise in strategic organizational development, financial administration, funding success, talent management, audience building, and growth.

Experience managing a budget of over $800k.
-
Proven commitment to and demonstrated leadership experience working in culturally diverse organizations.
-
Demonstrated ability to build and lead effective and high performing teams.
-
Success in high level fundraising, public funding, endowment planning, and growth and other strategic development efforts, including experience with grant writing or working hands on in conjunction with a grant writer, and developing and implementing seasonal fundraising campaigns.

Experience in planning, development, collaboration, and execution of public showcases and events.
-
Skilled communicator, learner, listener, and collaborator - open, approachable, personable – who creates a positive working environment within the organization and community.

Experience in marketing or managing a marketing team and plan.

Embraces technology and is experienced in leveraging current communication tools and management platforms designed for organization & efficiency.

Ability to work some weekends and evening hours as necessary.

SALARY: Salary range is $85,000 to $110,000 and commensurate with experience. Health insurance benefits and PTO.
