The Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation (BCZ) is an Oakland-based nonprofit dedicated to helping legacy communities, like East Oakland, thrive through arts and culture, place keeping, community development, and economic/workforce development programs and initiatives. In partnership with the City of Oakland WFD Board, mandated workforce partners, and training and education partners, the BCZ provides a range of services designed to help local residents access jobs and workforce training that leads to high-paying, in-demand jobs. 

The BCZ Community Builder - Workforce and Career role connects residents of and from Deep East Oakland to career and workforce opportunities. The  Community Builder stewards communications, relationship building, and navigation to ensure that residents successfully access workforce information, tools, programs, and support services needed for successful job placements, retention, and growth in high-paying, in-demand jobs in the City and region.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Resident Engagement Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct regular outreach efforts including tabling at events, and participating in community workforce-related meetings, and other community convenings.

  • Conduct navigation sessions with residents to determine their career and workforce goals.

  • Connect residents with workforce opportunities, resources, and training available from workforce partners.

  • Connect workforce education, training, placement providers, and employers with residents who have completed initial and check-in sessions and schedule periodic Navigator Check-In Sessions with referral partners to track the success of referred residents and to update best practices. 

  • Manage a communications platform and process which connects residents with current quality employment opportunities, workforce training opportunities, placement programs, and career pathways.  

Partnership and Community Engagement Responsibilities 

  • Build and leverage relationships with external community resources and employers to maximize and support residents' placement, retention, and success in high-paying, in-demand jobs, and careers.

  • Work collaboratively to develop and maintain our Messenger, CREW, and Ambassador Programs as an entry point for employment and training in Project Management. 

Administrative Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain a database and communications platform with information that tracks individual progress and outcomes and promote that database, in coordination with our community engagement, marketing, and communications groups.

  • Submit all required and requested documentation/reports/paperwork by assigned due dates

  • Track the performance of Workforce, Education, and Training providers and engage with them to recommend changes that will improve placement and retention rates and placements of residents in high-paying, in-demand jobs. 

  • Meet performance goals and demonstrate behaviors of the BCZ’s Operating Agreements

  • Act as a backup for other Community Navigators and Builders as needed 

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Community Engagement Manager 

Skills/Experience: 

Job Requirements 

  • This position requires daily resident navigation with 5 – 10 resident navigation sessions per week. 

  • This position requires day-to-day partnership and community engagement with a load of 5 – 10 meetings or events per month, on average. 

  • This position operates in a five-day work. Hours may be flexed as needed to perform duties

  • This position may require working some evenings and weekend hours 

  • This position is exempt 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated experience and success in working with people who have multiple barriers to securing employment. 

  • Experience in leading work groups. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, social work, or other related field preferred

  • Community relations and interpersonal skills are a must. 

  • Strong communication skills-written and oral. 

  • Must enjoy working with partners, residents, and in a team.

  • Intermediate skills in Google Workspace, the internet, and email are required. 

  • High professional standards must be maintained at all times.
